Good day, no rain!

I finally had a decent day to get in the woods!

I am, and will be for the forseable future unable to get down into the swamp bottom where the largest portion of my log piles are located. So I decided to take down an ash that was fairly close to the house and a cherry that just recently became a dead stander..

Sorry for crappy pics.. the cherry that I took down is the center most cherry in the pic. And the Ash, well I forgot to take a pic of it standing, so A crappy pic of it on the ground blocked is all I can provide .


Shawn Curry taking down that cherry to get milled got me to wonderin' around lookin at my cherry trees a little bit ago. I have more larger ones(20" or bigger) than I realized. I took a few pics of my larger cherry trees with giant cankers. I'm now entertaining the thought of taking a few down and either slabbing them out myself or having my buddy bring his woodmizer over and do it. Cherry is my wife's fav for furniture and I'd like to make her something nice from it just a thought....

Haha I certainly didn't "have" to. I definitely wanted to though. I'm a glutton for punishment.

 

I have cut a few times in the heat when the farmer I cut on the most was in a big hurry......there are a few younger bucks that will cut for him in the heat now so I don't have to shoulder the burden.

i can't even get my quad into mine, it's the worst I've seen it. The sewer project somehow seemed to divert even more water into the swampy bottom

 

Yeah those cankers are contagious, best to remove them from the property and send them to me for inspection and disposal...

Just kidding - about the contagious part anyway. If you want to send them to me I'd love to have some cherry burl in the collection, though I'm not sure how I'd slice it! I tend to grow lot of curly maple here for some reason; I wonder if there's some sort of conditions at your place favorable to growing them.

If you have a buddy with a woodmizer I'd for sure call him to mill it. Chainsaw milling is fun but I wouldn't have taken my cherry if that's how I was going to cut it all up. Or if I did I'd only make one cut with the chainsaw: right thru the heart center. Then wrestle the two halves down to my basement and my shop made vertical band saw milling setup. The chainsaw takes a bigger kerf and tends to leave a rougher surface so you could end up losing quite a bit of wood if you plane it smooth. You can get a better surface with practice, but, it takes practice.

Thanks for the input sir. Im thinking my buddies mill will be the better choice lol. After I got to thinkin, I realized I was not equipped to tackle these monsters with my chainsaw mill. It would be a disservice to these old trees to not give them a proper milling.

I think I've chosen the 2 that I want to take down. The tricky part is going to be getting them on the ground and out of the woods, they are on a steep grade atleast 400yds from the house.

 

Those are some beauties! You could certainly get a pile of lumber with a CSM from those. And I'd want the wide live edge slabs from the curvy one.

Y'now if ya need any help with those...
