Over the 5 years I have been burning now I have averaged roughly 8-10 face cords per year. I currently am sitting on roughly 58 face cords.....Almost 6-7 seasons of wood depending on the winter's....Keep going or take a year or two off? Thoughts.....
Good Lawd! Way to go on the efficiency! I guess the question is what kind of space do you have for storage. If you have plenty of room and you enjoy splitting and stacking, then go for it. If you're starting to stash wood in random nooks and crannies, you may be a true hoarder and need to let the stacks dwindle a bit, haha. The other question is do you always have access to a good amount of wood, or did you build up your inventory due to a bad storm that took down half the trees on your property. The other option is putting it out there that you have some for sale, and give yourself a little W.A.M.- that's Walkin' Around Money! In any case, that's a substantial amount of BTUs at your disposal. Good on ya!
A pinnacle question to which has a fickle answer but for what it's worth, continue cutting and replacing what you burn, its hard to go wrong.
You're not here because you're a non-farwood-hoarder, right? Get/cut it, scrounge it, whichever is your way!
I think if I was 6 or 7 years out I would maybe slow down some. Maybe take a year off going to the mountains.
I'll be the dissenting vote either take some time off (don't cut for 1-2 years) or sell some and buy a new toy or three! It's great to be 3 to 4 years ahead beyond that there reaches a point (decide for yourself where the line is) where it becomes an obsession not a hobby. I would rather have a few more toys that make the CSS easier and more fun!
Kinda the same place where I am at, I have enough and knowing this becomes perpetual in the spring, the cycle will continue. Being new to this amount of wood, Im still figuring out where it should go, obeying the basics and being thoughtful. The thing of it is, selling wood doesn't sound half bad but sometimes I hear the rate of firewood in one place can be quite different than another and it definitely depends on what it is. At least here in WA it seems to, based on kind of wood and prices. That's me hoping to collect some change to keep my supply running and put cut rounds into some pocket change. Might help me invest in a new wood hauler or something. Otherwise hardwood is just hardwood and sold for a flat rate, not trying to jump here but the rates seem to have rises, dips and some are just plateaued because the wood is plentiful but only gets to be set since its a matter of finding someone who is willing to get it to you. And hopefully seasoned at somewhat! The original poster doesn't have to worry about that question or its answer. But either way its looking good.
You have to make that choice, but your setting pretty good at the current time... As long as your able to cut and replace what you've just burned you'll be A OK....
I would keep going. You never know when "life could get in the way". Something could happen that eats into your time in a big way, which could set you back. Maybe take the hoarding pace down but don't stop completely. My 2c.
It all depends Mike. I've thought from time to time that perhaps it was time to slow down...then Mother Nature made me slow down. Thankfully we've had some help in the last couple of years and you guys know who you are and I just can not thank you enough. On the other hand, I well remember having over 20 cord of wood cut, split and stacked at one time or another. Then it just seems that sooner or later a neighbor or friend needs a little bit of help so we do help them out. It is really nice to be able to do that. And already we have one neighbor who is in need of some help both this coming winter and especially the next couple because of both physical problems plus he is battling some cancer problems. We'll help and already the Firewood guys have committed to helping him out next spring when they come here. Selling a little bit can be okay but you really don't get that much money for the time spent. However, if you look at the firewood gathering as a hobby, then the time is meaningless. Go for it. But whatever you do, keep in mind that we never know from day to day what may happen. More than one person on this forum have experienced some hard times following an injury or sickness. Pray that never happens to you but, be prepared!
