I got a late start splitting with this year because the Lovejoy on my splitter broke. It took me a while to get the parts and fix it. I thought I'd post some pictures of what I've split since then. I'm keeping all the wood this year on pallets. So I can move around easily with the tractor and forks .
Right now I used up my last pallet so I'm waiting to get more.
I've been breaking up pallets to make the sides on the new firewood racks so the only cost to me is screws and nails
All the wood is red Oak except for the last two pictures
The last picture is all the cherry I've been hoarding in the second to last is maple

Feels great. I really enjoy splitting the wood and the pallets make it easy to move around .
I try to do a personal quota of at least one or two pallets per day depending on weather.
Right now I'm out of pallets so I'm taking a break till I make more

Very nice setup you have there. I like the pallets on the non-working risers. Helps the pallets last a bit longer

That is pretty neat with double stacking the pallets. Does that hold up pretty good.

That's a good amount of oak Mike. You'll like that in the cold of January.

The lower pallet saves the one on top
You can see in the pics what the lower pallet looks like after 3 years and it was Oak too!
The ones under the wood get pushed down into the ground but keep the upper ones dry

Yeah in 5 years or so
This is what I'll be burning this winter. Compliments of hurricane Sandy all beautiful straight oak.
Stack is 7 ft high and two pallets deep , 6 pallets long and covered for 3 years with metal roofing

Backwoods Savage that pic got me thinking if you look close in the lower left you can see the yellow carryall that I got from tractor supply pretty cheap.
I narrowed the angle iron on the end so I could back in and lift a pallet of wood with the 3 point lift on back of tractor.
It can lift a lot more weight than the pallet forks!

Yes, you definitely need that for moving pallets. Trying to do that with the FEL most times you need some ballast for the rear. In addition, when carrying heavy stuff, the rear of the tractor is built a bit heavier than the front!

Yeah, I've used the tiller for one too but it doesn't work well when in the woods where the turning around is tight. So most times I just don't use it. I do hope to get a back hoe next year.

I love my tractor and honestly could not imagine managing all this firewood without one
I'm 7 years ahead I think. Must do a cord count to be sure.
The tractor is like having a 6 person work crew here every day
    And it's fun too!

Just did a cord count using the cord calculator
    and the total is
    50.4 cords
    :D

I think I'll post pics of it all in the
The OFFICIAL Firewood Hoarder's Club thread!!!
