A look by the numbers at the wildfires burning across British Columbia Im safe in the eastern part of the province and have yet to experience the smoke we often get from wildfires but it sure is dry out. Mid 90s all week and very little rain for weeks! I feel for those who are displaced. Fortunately I havent heard of any fatalities yet.
Stay safe out there. I'd be more than happy to give you some of the rain we have been getting this year if I could
Thanks. Ive been keeping a bit of an eye on the weather out east and at a glance it looks like it hasnt been all that nice of a summer so far. I would love a week of cool wet weather out this way . We have two days coming up with a 40-60% chance of showers and a high of only 25c before it launches back into the 30s so I might head to the high country for some standing dead doug fir I found last year.
183 fires! Wow! I'd be willing to bet you'll be getting some smoke from those soon. Probably have some beautiful sunsets now. We do hope they stay a long way from you Sean.
Fortunately the fire in our area is pretty well out. Had a bit of rain last night but today is clearing up and looking dry. It won't take much to be fire hazard dry again.
Hate forest fires, but it used to be a way that nature renewed the forest. I have been in California and seen the fires. The evening sky and just orange, and the air heavy with smoke. That went on for days.
Sorry Sean, scary at worst and smoke and haze uncomfortable at best. Stay safe, glad you aren't near them. Not sure about your air circulation in your home but air conditioners can help with the smoke, swamp coolers are decent, and even a damp towel over windows helps a bit. Praying for those affected, heard like 3000 homes evac'd?
That's the way it's supposed to be. Putting all those fires out year after year is where the super fires come from.
Most of the worst fires are between Sean and us in a very hot dry part of the province. It is ranching country so livestock as well as people are being displaced. Lots of beetle killed jack pine is adding to the problems as well.
Sorry been busy today. Forest fires are a natural part of what we deal with when living in forests so we roll with it. Most years we get some to lots of wood smoke in the air from fires sometimes from hundreds of miles away. We are so dry in the eastern part of bc that it may be only a matter of time before something happens but we will see. Thunderstorms for tonight but sky is clear. 33c and windy right now. Same as for the last few weeks. My wife and kids are on pender island right now Woodwidow and my wife says it's only 21c and not sure she wants to come home on Wednesday. She called a little while ago and suggested I take a video of our house in case something happens. Talked about where the pictures are etc. She was going to take the trans Canada home but it's closed because of wild fires so will pop into the states to get home.
Ive heard about 7000 people displaced so your number seems plausible but its hard to say with so much information coming in during a developing issue. The military may be coming in and fire fighters from the rest of the country are on their way. The number of fires seem to be over 230 now. The province has declared a state of emergency which apparently helps get funds and help throughout the province. Thanks for the helpful tips. We dont have ac here, not sure what a swamp cooler is but Ill likely google it. A town near us burned down twice in and around the late 1800s so they built all the buildings out of brick.
