I heated my whole house from the basement with a cheap stove when I had a ranch. Now with this new stove (Princess) and this leaky house it's harder to keep up. New stove does a lot better but this house just sucks the heat right out.

I heat this shack from the basement with an old King. I'm on record pace as far as wood consumption goes. I'll probably get to 6.5 - 7 cord (yes, I spelled that correctly) before the season is over.

Now, with an insulated attic? Hard to say. But, before the insulation, to heat this place the same way the stoves do, I would guess 1500-1700 gallons. We were going through 1300 gallons just to keep the temps at 60-65.

Every year it gets better. With more insulation and new doors, I think I could get this down to 7-8 cords per winter.

Yeah, this winter was the easiest to heat even though it might have been the coldest. But, I really want longer burn times and decreased wood consumption.

Oddly enough, windows are pretty low on the "replacement/repair" list at this point. I could probably tighten up the storm windows a bit, but I have sealed the chit out of them. I no longer get frost on any of the windows. Sure, a lot of them can not open any more due to the caulking... but you take the good with the bad.

Every time I see your avatar with the Weather Underground I think of Bill Ayers and the Weathermen Underground bombing one of our cities. Interesting name for a weather service.

The "sheepies" thing has been a long running funny thing. I don't remember the specifics but at the time, the rules of correct grammar stated the plural of "sheep" should be "sheepies". This was a famous argument between a teacher and a seminary student, both friends of mine at the time.

I had in my basement a pool liner I had bought and never used. Decided to try it instead of tarps over the wood this winter.

It was a great success. Heavy enough so it doesn't move, even in 60 mph gust. Really easy to brush snow of it, if the snow piles get to high. Had it so it draped about six inches over the side of the stack. My wood stayed completely dry this winter, despite this being one of the snowiest winters we have had. And the liner looks like new. I'm sure it will last for many years. I'm going to buy a few more for my other stacks.
