No ATVs allowed on the farm......that's why I struggle all winter in the snow over there!

I've already got us permission to get the skidsteer back to get those nice white oak saw logs.......As soon as the ground dries out this spring, well do it.

No atvs but a skidsteer and sled are allowed, is that just to keep people from hotrodding around and tearing up the ground?

Yes.....He had problems several years back. He and his wife would take rides around the property from time to time on their Gator. Well local kids saw that and said "hey, we must be allowed to ride our quads there!", and proceeded to do so without so much as even asking permission!
And you know how some kids ride their quads!

I help him "police" the farm and he gives me.full privileges over there. ..He and his wife are AWESOME neighbors.

I just spoke with the wife about tapping some trees next year, she really doesn't care so I'm on my own if I decide to do it.

That looks bad S.O., hope you're ok. The trails up this way are like rock since we dropped below freezing.

We might get about three inches of snow this week so that will help out some.

    Are you welding the ski?

Woody, I fixed the ski by welding the crack and cutting out some patch panels to re-enforce the ski, welded the patches on the topside.
Had a bad incident last night, the OPPOSITE ski came loose at the leaf spring mount when out for a test ride with my helmet mounted phone-camera. Wrecked the sled at 45mph. I'm OK....the Samsung S4? Not so good......:emb:

Ok so here is my main questions!
    1) how do you know when to open and close the syrup valve on your boiling pans?
    2) how do you filter the syrup or do you even need to?
    3) if I use a brewing bucket 7 gal to collect how long will it take to fill? I leave at 5:30 am and am home at 6:00 pm usually. That said I don't work Friday, Sat or Sunday and also have access to a lot of box elder. Can the syrups be boiled together maple and box elder?

1: Cant help there-My pan has no valves. My valve is me dumping more sap in from a preheated pan. Keep your boiling pan as full as possible but dont kill the boil by adding too much cold sap.

2: I use the hobby filter kit (see link) to filter. Yes, you really should. Lots of solids in it. This is by far the hardest part. Once it cools down, its a beeeotch to get to pass thru the filters. http://www.sugarbushsupplies.com/2013_Catalog/filtertankscanningunits.pdf

3: 7 gallon bucket will take a while but depends on how many taps you have going into it. Safe to assume 1 gal per day per tap on a good run. Less on colder days.

I dont know jack about box elder syrup. No help here. Sorry.

I tapped 10 trees w/ 2 taps each last week but this dayum snow coming in this weekend is going to keep me from boiling my first batch. At least its been way below normal cold so I probably dont have alot anyway.
