Direct injection. Direct into the combustion chamber vs port injection that goes into the manifold ports. DI it's great, makes more power, but it gunk's up the intake ports. Having both DI and port injection eliminates that issue, and gets even better power than di alone. Toyota has dual injection on their new v6 in the Tacoma.

It will spread to pretty much all cars and trucks eventually, unless some better tech comes along.

They (Toyota) have used it (ds-4) for over a decade. Hardly anything new and exciting.
It's an expensive setup, again needed for emmisions.

Using both does not eliminate the issue, but mitigates it. Again Ford is using it for increased efficiency, hp and mpg.
It doesn't just "gunk up intake ports" the injector valves and pistons get "gunked up".

As far as arguing one brand other the other, I don't know why you left out Toyota and dodge.
Well, I guess the incomplete list of gm specifications is enough though.
So much for brand loyalty... ignorance ...blah blah blah ....

comparing ohv to dohc? Valves and boost? That's a can of worms. I'd rather not get into with a magazine spec jockey.

Boost, dohc and smaller displacement, is something that most manufactures I believe are working towards.

Since you seem to despise gm so much don't worry.
GM's 22+ year old lsx technology (that's apparently butthurt you so bad)will soon not be good enough to pass emissions or keep up with boosted dual overhead cam motors.

I do think the coyote is far superior to Toyotas 5.7. (yota lies about it's camshaft issues)
Neither great, good yes great no... imo.

Even with Ford's numerous growing pains. Oil pump failures broken timing chains etc. I still think ford made a good effort.

There's talk of the Lexus 5.0 with an 8 SPD auto going to the tundra. Just under 400hp 400 tq.
If that were to get into the tundra, that would be nice.

Ford is the only one of the 3 doing a DOHC engine in a truck. The dual overhead cams have TiVCT(Twin Independent Cam timing), so you have good bottom end torque and topend horsepower. Then for has the ecoboost engines, squeezing a lot of power from small engines, while getting good mileage and being reliable. GM and Ram are still stuck in the stoneages using pushrod engines. GM is supposed to being making a DOHC engine for the Corvette for next year. So who has the smallest engine in a truck putting out the most power? Ford has a 2.7 putting down 325hp which probably does not count since it is forced induction so there is the 3.3 that is n/a making 290hp.

I commend you for giving the coyote a good word. I know you are a GM guy. Most GM guys will not say a good thing about a Ford.

I think the Ford will smoke the Hemi on the street. Next time you are in a 5.0 f150 floor it from a dig with traction control off. It will hook up and go. A Hemi will smoke its tires.

It is a different 4.3 than what they used back in the day.

Your right comparing OHV to DOHC is not fair. DOHC will make more power. GM not seem to be doing much with boost and smaller displacements. Ford is leading the pack.

The LSX was not good enough to keep up with the current 1/2 ton engines. I will say that the fastlane truck tested the 6.0 chevy and a 6.4 hemi and the 6.0 out did the Hemi towing. I think Ram is over rating their HP but that is another discussion:rofl:  They have not tested a 6.2 Ford yet. Since we are talking about the LSX, remember how I said GM copied Ford? Did you know that the LS1 has a small block Ford cylinder head bolt pattern and with a couple of mods to some coolant ports it will work?

The oil pump gear failures are from guys that like to bang the 2 step. If you don't do that they don't break.

Fastlane is kinda a joke(as are most magazine YouTube reviewers some people parrot them for everything not saying you are ), their testing tries to be fair I think and do an okay job, but they do stupid things like test at elevation turbo bs n/a where maybe 5% of people use a vehicle?
Then they try to compare different set up trucks different gears transmissions etc.
To 99% of people it won't even matter driving to work. What matters is gadgets and thinking your the best while driving.:p

Who cares about the big three? Nissan and Cummins is pretty cool. Definatley peaks my interest, Toyota has lead the way in many apsects but they are just blah on arrival. Honda's are the most overrated of them all. Their rep is slowly dying a painful death.

The lsx is the furthest thing from a Ford copy it's an old wives tale. People have headswapped for decades....
The heads were run on a "super computer" in the early 90s with some billion? or so of computing hours. Moving an exhaust port is a streach to claim of copying riding the coat tails of the success of the most swapped popular motors. It's like saying Ford and Chrysler coppied block architecture from GM's 80s motors...

I'm not a GM guy I'm a whatever I want to buy guy, I thought I made the brand loyalty thing clear.
Although I am a big fan of harbor freight:rofl: .

If Ford could build a ground breaking motor and a good platform (sho?weak trans..poormans Godzilla?) and keep it around for us aftermarket guys to have fun with I could bite.

The motor I had alot of hope for was the voodoo, but that's a peice of trash IMO. If it proved to be rock solid and take a blower and double the power....here's my money...... The idea was awesome. Especially the sound.

Gm has subsidaries in the Marine world that have been using dohc, that the Corvette engine will be/is derived from.
It will trickle into trucks. Gm has announced a while ago most of their bread and butter fleet vehicles will be small forced induction.

When the need arises for emissions and milage requirements they will have to switch.
Companies don't just throw in costly emission technology because they want to. They don't generally spend the money to impress idiots either.

GM's fatal flaw was letting the government in. (Appointees within the company)Everybody took bail outs(and still do with tax breaks incentives to move etc.) but government burocracy certainly took it's toll.
Nothing new from gm besides the Duramax gets me wanting to buy, but most new stuff from everyone is bland now. IMO no real standouts. Everybody is trying to satisfy "big brother".

My common experience in business is hardly the comparative for insight into what billion dollar companies are doing or thinking.....

OHC beats OHV every time. There is an antiquated V-twin motorcycle that has refused to recognize that fact and so far they are outselling everyone else but it is not based on performance or reliability. It is based on name recognition and US-centric buyers. But it is an American bike is the rallying cry for those who like to be left behind by modern designs and the manufacturer recognizes that as the people who actually buy their bikes so they have not changed. There are far better engineered options available, including the one that I ride, but without the visible external pushrod covers people think the engines look funny. Well OK, but have you ridden one of those bikes that don't have that "feature"? My bike is also "American made" but it is no longer in production because it looks funny to tradition bound folks. I used to own one of those other pushrod bikes but it was a total POS when it came to power and reliability. My present bike was unable to ever generate the popularity that would have made it profitable so today it is no longer being made. I will ride mine till the wheels fall off and will only see that other brand in my rear view mirrors. Popular is often not the same as good.

The pentastar v6 in the 1500 rams is dohc. The ecodiesel ram is dohc as well. Ram, actually Dodge had a 4.7 ohc v8. That was a great motor. I've had one in a Jeep, and my buddy has one in a Dakota. The 4.7 were great motors. I don't know why they stopped making them, but it's FCA's loss.
The original revised hemi just left a bad impression with head and valvetrain issues. I'd be shocked if those issues weren't taken care of this many years later, but mpg of hemi motors is not good.

    I'm anxious to drive a coyote 5.0 f150.

I agree fastlane is joke. I don't watch them that often. I am amazed that manufactures give them vehicles to test. They are really dumb and so is Mr truck. Mr Truck almost hit Roman or one of the goof balls on a Ford test track testing the new 3.5 ecoboost and 10 speed. They were drag racing Mr truck had the old ecoboost and the 6 speed and Roman or whoever had the new 3.5 and 10 speed. Mr truck was not watching were he was going and almost side swiped them. Then when they tested the Ram 2500 with 6.4 they had too much tongue weight and the trailer was swaying dangerously. The stopped and moved the truck on the trailer back and it was still swaying when they did the Ike gauntlet. Then they always tie the vehicle to the trailer by hooking to the trailer hitch and the tow or hooks, not buy the axles like they should. Then I can think a test they did and they messed with the results.

I'm not the crazy about the Titan XD. I like Cummins engines and DOHC engines but I'm not sure I like the new 5.0. The timing chain setup looks crazy but I guess Cummins has it figured out. The Titan XD Cummins is not that good of performer either and the mileage sucks.

The LS1 head bolt pattern is funny to me, It is a SBF bolt pattern. I thought the SBC had (supposedly) a superior bolt pattern with 5 bolts around each cylinder and then they copy Fords bolt pattern.

Nobody seems to be doing anything with the Voodoo. Lethal performance has one with nitrous that went 10's. The coyotes respond extremely well to a blower. They are very easy to get in a low 10 sec 1/4 mile with a blower. If you want to put more boost to it 9's are possible. They run pretty good in a truck too.

I think I know the bikes you are talking about, the ones that everything shakes on when they are sitting at a stop light. They are not just a bike manufacturer but a brand. People who don't even have their motorcycle license wear their clothing. The same thing goes for a tractor manufacturer. Some people just buy a tractor because of the color.

I've seen a few 4.7s with a valve seat that had popped out.

Yes, name recognition is a big part of their appeal and I regard them as a clothing company that also sells bikes. I find their riding gear quite nice but I bought the first of it when I was riding a Yamaha and I still use it while riding my Victory. That does not mean I am ready to buy in on their present bikes, not even the newer M8s.
As far as Cummins engines, I really liked those engines and even owned some Cummins stock for a while because of that. I sold mine off a few months back so no longer track them as closely as I did back then.

The Nissan Titan is ugly to me. The 5.6 is a gas sucker, and Nissan had issues with their auto trannies, well CVT at least. It seems they can make a good manumatic, in the GTR, but that's a Borg Warner unit, at the wrong end of a vehicle for a truck.

The XD version is the heavy half ton truck, that you can get a Cummins diesel in it. $$, and it doesn't make sense to me.

Don't get me started on the bane of all motorcycling. I live in the Milwaukee area ( far north, but still) , and I can't stand them. I hope that they don't buy Ducati. They'd ruin Ducati like they did MV Agusta, and even worse, Buell.

If you want an American cruiser bike, just buy an Indian instead. Polaris had to axe the Victory brand after finally acquiring an iconic brand like Indian. I work with a couple that each has Victory bikes. We've had discussions.

I know guys that have had bad 4.0 I6 Jeep motors. That was a great motor, but you can get a bad one of anything. I have only heard of random misfires on the 4.7 Chrysler. They were picky about copper plugs only, and there were coil issues, but those were supposed to be replaced as wear items.;)

Go rent one. Work for a big company? Perhaps they have a negotiated rate. We pay intermediate rate and can drive anything on the lot not considered "super-premium".

There are so many factors that contribute to a persons choice of truck/car/motorcycle. Some of those factors are measurable and some are not.

I see a short bed truck and wonder what the heck is that used for, the short bed owner then unhooks the trailer and parks in the garage.

I see a certain type of car and can't believe someone would spend money on that pos, then a Lexus/BMW/ Mercedes passes me.

I am cruising down the road on my motorcycle enjoying a nice relaxing tour and stop for fuel, someone will tell the story of someone they know hurt on motorcycles or a fellow biker make comments about lack of power or speed. Heck, if I wasn't into motorcycles I still wouldn't drive a fast car, I'm a touring and scenery man.

There is usually something from every manufacturer that I find interesting and am impressed with. I just like the mechanics and engineering aspect of vehicles. I don't care what you drive/ride. Be respectful to myself and others and I will always help/ assist any way possible if I can.

I have a work tuck with backup cam it's a dodge and not as neat as the f150 for trailer hook up but still amazing for hooking a trailer up.

I have freinds with older models than the 18. One is like a 14 and the other probably the same? One has the v8 and other eco boost . The v8 guy gets like 15 to 17 mph around town where he drives. The other gets close to 20 on the commute to work and town. The v8 tows a like 5x10 box trailer at most without trouble . The other tows a 60hp Ag tractor on big trailer sometimes and says he had no issue.

Me personally, I think I'd get the eco boost. Or if your not converted on the twin turbo I think 18 is goingoing to see a naturally aspirated v6 as well, if I remember right.

I personally would go for the v6 in one form or other if you don't tow much...even if you do I have read guys that say the EB has no trouble.

Some here that also belong to a large tractor site will know who DP is ;-) he is a huge fan of them.

The company I work for is pretty small on that scale. However, the owner of the company I work for is very good friends with one of the Boucher group owners. It's one of the biggest car dealers in the state. Possibly the biggest? They give employees I work preferred pricing, supposedly. I could choose pretty much any vehicle and they'll sell it. Minus the exotic and high end German stuff. That's fine, as I want to get back to something a bit more "common" than what I currently drive. When there's only 800 ever made of my Audi, over 2 years, that's pretty darn rare, and very expensive if something big goes.

The ram, eh. 2 guys at work have them. I've not heard that great of personal reviews from these two owners. Both have 5.7 hemi motors. I'm a bit off put by electrical Gremlins in past mopars we've had. Fiat owning Mopar only scares me more.

Hearing how awesome the new Alfa Romeo Guilia quadrifoglio is, then reading how they "brick" and render the car immovable really scares me. I know, the Ram is no Guilia, but it's still scary.

If you're buying a 2018, the F150 with the 5.0L would be my pick. The biggest downside to the EcoBoost options for long-term ownership (beyond the warranty) would be the cost to repair that motor, especially the 2.7L. You have a fair bit of extra plumbing to deal with which adds plenty of labor time. Plus the 5.0L makes all the right noises under the hood.

400hp on a 10spd, plus the v8's reliability and simplicity seem to make it a good fit for your desire to have something more "common."
