I was cutting firewood and while lugging out cherry rounds I kept passing a raspberry bush. I stopped to take a break and eat some raspberries and saw broken tool handles. My curiosity got the best of me and I started digging around in the bush only to find four Axe Heads. Two Kelly Works flint edges a double bit and single bit. A cheap Chinese single bit, and an unknown single bit (the one thats painted orange). The two on the left are the Kelly works The orange one has a maker's mark of the letter M inside of a diamond and a crescent moon to the right and left I have no idea who made it if anyone can tell me. The double bit is rehafted already. Here's an ash that I took down amongst the cherry trees. I'll try to get some pics of the cherry. I used the double bit to split it. I'm going to take out a few shag barks and I'll use it to rehaft the single bits once it's dry. I think it'll be neat to use would from the same Woods I found the heads. I've been looking for a nice double bit for a few years. In the blink of an eye the search was over.
Bush grew around them. Several broken tools in the pile. I think it's just where the property owner discarded broken thinks. I spoke to him and he said he has "scads" more in piles and buckets everywhere in his numerous buildings. He said I can have them all. He bought them at farm auctions. He's an older fellow now. I cut firewood off his property for us both. Supposed to split 60 for me 40 him but I do 50-50. I also give him my hay of my field.
Can't imagine just walking off and leaving those. Who knows what story is behind those tools. Good that you found them and put them back in service.
I started up the true temper Kelly works single bit. I got excited on a last fitting and boogered up the haft.
