A sniper with Canada’s elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,450 metres.

Sources say a member of Joint Task Force 2 killed an Islamic State insurgent with a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle while firing from a high-rise during an operation that took place within the last month in Iraq. It took under 10 seconds to hit the target.

I checked and this is over 2 miles!!!!

I read about this. That's crazy long distance. Just imagine all the variables to making that shot and how much math was done to accomplish it.

There is skepticism, the shot nearly doubles the pre existing record.
In other words making a extremely difficult shot seem impossible.
Was it possible? Sure lob enough shots you might get lucky.

I personally wouldn't trust the Canadian military.

If it is true, which who knows, you couldn't make that shot without at least a little bit of luck.

And I thought popping groundhogs out at 300-400 yards with my 22-250 was a good shot! Holy crap!

Maybe you wouldn't trust the Canadian Military but other militaries right around the globe have nothing but high praise for them, including the top US military leaders.

If it's true, that's an amazing shot. If it's not that's ok. Mission accomplished!

    Good shot.
If it took 10 seconds I hope he fired, Drank his tea and left the building all in that time.

That 10 seconds is the one that I question. I'm guessing the rifle used threw a bullet quite fast yet that figures to just a tad under 1132 fps. Something just doesn't figure there. No doubt the bullet slowed a lot in that time but that would really be slowing it down big time.

Actually if the bullet is from
A high powered rifle, chances are its moving speeds over 5,000 feet per second. But!!!, math and rifle here is subjected to scrutiny. start with the initial weight of the bullet and the load which is likely to be under Military specifications which to be honest with you isn't an overload but all maximizations are possible here. Then with max velocities figured decreased by distance...a bullet loses more than 3/4 of its speed after half a mile anyways. Then factor in variables, coefficients, not to mention the sniper might have been aiming for the mountains as the article says he was on a high rise then terminal velocity sets in.

If anything it probably sets this shot as so lucky, I could find a 4 leaf clover in 60 acres of open space easier than make that shot.

So who knows how long it actually took to arrive at its target?
Oh, and before anyone pops off on how inhumane this is, or some other such bleeding heart mantra....don't bother.
They'd kill you in a heartbeat.
Let me qualify that statement....someone here made a similar remark about some I-racky getting offed....nuff said.

I've been on the other side of this for awhile but now its justified that if someone wants me dead, prepare to fight. Im all for guns and the freedoms involved. This is an insurgent they talked about being killed who's purpose is to kill and kill many as possible. Just a single father defending his daughter and turf here and happy to do so in the US OF A!:):usa:

Ok, the shooter was JTF2. Canadian Spec. Ops. , very well respected group of operators, also very quiet.
The shot has been verified, closer OP with the correct equipment to verify this.
This was not a one shot deal. This occurred over several hours of engagement, according to current reports.
The actual time-of-flight for the bullet was about 8.5 sec., hence the "less than 10 seconds" thing.(.50 BMG 700 gr. A-Max @ 2700 fps for ballistic comparison- target was struck with less than 1000 FPS velocity.)
The shooters spotter deserves a medal, incredible math and guess work skills. Super huge kudos to that guy!!

A nice note- unconfirmed reports state the Canadian shooter was able to text the target during the bullets flight.

    "Sorry, eh."
