I never thought about that; maybe I should visit some saw mills and ask them what they do with culls and such; I would have to pay for delivery but it may be a way to get some firewood on the cheap.
I finished up topping off that 5 banger today. Here are the blocks so far that I got stacked. The 4 banger I have laid out will start the blocks I'm going to sixth. When that one is done ill do one more 4 banger with sixths. Ill have 27 pallets with them when I'm done

nice easy score! I picked up about half a cord of 6x6 hardwood boards last fall from work. Nice easy processing, I split most of them in half and then into the stove they went. I was pizzed that I had to have missed out on at least 10 cords worth of it that they gave away before I got back to that job site. I should stop into the mill thats about a half hour from here and see if they offer such awesomeness.
Don't miss out on those opportunities, I love the square wood I picked up like 2-3 weeks ago 4x4's Only partially what I picked up but i would gather it close to a cord if I added it up.
I gotta say BeechNut, you have to be doing something right when you've have folks so envious that they are jealous. Good for you, and your stacks look great.
What is it with the squares that are so nice? I think its because its not a small piece of wood when they add up. BeechNut is doing good and so is Mwalsh9152! By the way got any pics of that wood or you burn it already??
Oh I was wondering about Mwalsh9152 since he said he picked some up but no pictures!!! Yours are very drool worthy and hoping to still see you put a single block in or the close as you can get it! Haha one log and done!
I wish. Those things would never dry if I didn't split them. I quartered most of them. But I did half some of them and they are BIG. Being red and white oak I have my doubts that the halves will be below 20% even in 4 years to tell you the truth. If so I'll just pop them in half and give them another year.
I only burned when I was home last winter, so the heat ran pretty often. My blocks were a little wet, but if I would split them in half, or third them, then stack them in my boiler room, they would burn with no hiss a week later.
Sounds good to me, hopefully we'll all be seeing that in the stove jenga when the time comes! Will be super cool bud no doubt!
Yeah I think I will be loading mine pretty much often since they provide good packing ability but living in WA you get a toss up of good and cold weather. So its anyones guess since we're almost at a minute basis with weather at this point. But excellent for the quick fires.
I found a nice source for 4X4's recently. Local Verizon yard has a metal dumpster next to the side road along their yard, on one side of it is cut up telephone poles, on the other side various length 4x4's and 4x6's mostly in the 4' range some hard, some soft wood. Ive been grabbing them as needed and I started putting my stacks on them, they work great. Once Im done with that I think Im going to see how well they burn and possibly use them in the shoulder season.
