I've done the tarp thing in the past, it sucks. I staple down 6 mil black plastic but the birds and squirells and chippys are destroying them. Not to mention the wood shifting and poking through and stretching and tearing them as well. I've had enough. I've been on the lookout for old tin or used Epdm for years. I'm done. I'm biting the bullet and shelling out a boatload of cash and buying brand new 60 mil rubber roofing so I don't have to pizz around anymore. The days of patching up holes with silicone or covering up a tear with duck tape is over. I don't care, ive totally had enough! Rant over!
We just had to replace our swimming pool... now I have a roll of pool fabric... nice heavy mil tarps to use for a wood pile- right now they are in 4' wide strips... will narrow them down when I have to use them
I like the rubber roofing membrane, I also tried a 1/2" X 4' X 8' sheet of ridgid insulation, ripped it lengthwise for my 16' long stack taped the seam in the middle and put some slate pavers on top to keep it in place. The insulation sheet costs $14.00 in the Depot. It's working well so far
Picked up 25 sheets of old barn roofing for $5 each a year and a half ago. Keep your eyes open so in 20 years when it comes time to replace the rubber roofing, you'll have something. I also like the idea of old pool liners as well as the metal sides of the traditional above ground pools. philadelphia free stuff "pool" - craigslist
I found a truck load of steel roofing at the dump! I screw it to the wood. Keep an eye on CL for used roofing. Good luck!
LOL! Let it out BeechNut Let that anger out! I've tried tarps as well and now just don't top cover. I stack single rows for 2 years and then in the wood shed for year before we burn. I got frustrated and said the heck with it. Even the reinforced, sunlight resistant tarps didn't hold up.
I couldn't do the tarps. Briank found a CL ad with wood, racks and rubber a few years ago. I think we got 8-9 pieces of rubber 5'6" x 20' works perfect for my 3.5 cord stacks skids are 5'5" square 18/19 wood 19/20 wood
Top covering rocks! We love the steel roofing panels. Notice the tarp covering something between the wood stacks? That was our log splitter.
brothers a roofer and most of our used stuff is unusable as they put Styrofoam under it and it comes up with it... plus 1 on pool liners works great .. heavy duty I mean they hold thousands of gallons of water.. no tarp will do that!
Love those stacks TD! I would give rubber a try but I can't seem to stay more than three years ahead and I don't have any issue with decay to speak of right now.
BeechNut .... Tell us how you really feel about tarps... ... I've got a couple of pieces of the EDPM stuff and love it... I just need to find more of it...
Well now that I've calmed down and figured out exactly how much roofing I'm going to need to cover 40 cords and what it's going to cost me I've came to my senses. I'll deal with a few holes here and there and siliconing them up. I have OCD really bad, take medication for it, so little things can really snowball into me obsessing about them to the point where it interferes with daily living. It sucks!
I would only be concerned with wood I was burning next year. Wood for the far future doesn't have to be covered, IMHO!
Yeah I get you brother BeechNut Some things like the square wood are reasons of such that I get the wood because its easy to handle,Its neat and requires no other alteration other than a cut in half if that. We all walk this life with a bit of a burden...hope sharing this helps a bit. Then you can get your stacks covered with the right stuff and feel more at ease. Im very much like you with the tarps, I called it quits in the last month because the stacks I have now shed the water better without the tarps and the rain doesn't stick around for days and days. When you're starting that project post about it. Some of us wanna join the party as well. Again thank you for sharing your hinderance. You're not alone and if you're dealing, shoot me a PM.
