I have 3 medium size Locust trees along the street between the sidewalk and street, they have basically destroyed my sidewalk heaving it up as much as 6" in some places. I called a tree service a few weeks ago to get a quote to remove them and grind the stumps ( I keep the wood), they wanted $1725.00 to do the job and I would still have to replace about 100 feet of sidewalk at several thousand dollars ! A friend that works for the city called and told me they (city) are looking at having the trees removed and replacing the sidewalk as part of city wide projects. They are currently replacing over 200 sections of sidewalk that are at the ends of the blocks to comply with ADA for wheelchair ramps. If this happens it will cost me ZERO ! and I get at least 1-2 cords of Locust ! My house is directly across the street from the High School and it has something to do with a safe routes to school program. I'll get a pic shortly and add it the post.
If You look at the end of the block you can see caution tape around one of the ramps they are installing. Also there is a big Cottonwood you can see right at the egde of the sidewalk, that is going away too thank God! Ever year it clogs up my A/C unit and I have to clean it off.
I can see why the city would want to replace the sidewalk. That looks nasty! Im hoping this ends up being a win win for you. Keep us in the loop!
Generally the sidewalk is the homeowners responsibility to maintain. The city has a 50/50 cost share program but only has limited funds available every year and if you use the program you have to use their approved contractor that charges about twice as much, so there is no savings.
Yes but when you think of ADA funds, they are given in priority if the environment is in violation of standards for those who use wheelchairs and require stable paths(the blind) in a residential area in a school zone.
Cool you get that fixed by the city jdude ! For those who might not know those slabs aren't badly damaged and might have been leveled cheaper with mudjacking.
Looks like some awesome bicycle jumps! Good luck with the trees! Ada can screw small towns over. They build a curb that's too tall or pit in a lamp post that doesn't meet compliance using funds from the fed, they have to replace it at their cost. Sometimes bankrupting small towns. I know my state has tried taking the reigns on design review to "help".
