Noticed this tonight as I started my splitting therapy. Never had termites before. Whatever the cause, I need suggestions to get rid of them. They are in my honey locust, and I'd rather keep that wood for my family. Thanks. [IMG][IMG]

I'm thinking powder post beetles. Are there little pinholes everywhere?

Powder post beetles...I had the same thing happen when I cut a couple Honey Locust...they go away after the wood drys a bit...year or so....but not after ventilating the wood some...guess it will help it dry faster, but makes a mess though!
I have pics of mine in a thread here somewhere...here it be...They chewed me a new one!

Yeah they'll go away once it's S/S for a while. My white oak blocks I got last year had some. They've been S/S for about a year and no more powder just the little pinholes where they once were. Although these stacks are all entirely cribbed and get maximum airflow and are drying better than I expected.

Pretty sure it's powder post beetle damage. My honey locust in my stacks had some too but I haven't seen any sign of them since last summer

I agree with the powder post assessment. I had them in some hackberry.

Spray the wood piles using insecticide with bifenthrin as the active ingredient and you won't have anything crawling from your wood. A concentrate can be bought at tsc, or any professional landscape supply.

As a bonus, the stuff is great for bug control in and around the house and yard. No more skeeters, ants, termites, ticks, etc.

Here, elm seems to be the worst for it. I have never sprayed in all the time we've burned wood and never had a problem.

Just be sure to knock a couple splits together to get the dust off before bringing into the house.

Same here, I've never had a problem. I also knock the dust off. They seem to be gone by the time I burn the wood.

I get a lot of it on my oak. Just another reason for me to top cover. After I stack it on the porch, I occasionally take an air blower to the stack to keep the mess outta the house. It feeds my makeshift worm bed beside the porch.
