Still a bit cold today 37°f at 8700 feet. It'll probably be another month before Cal trans removes all the snow, the yellow sign says it all.
Any chance you can slip around the gate? Or is that a really bad idea. Would be nice riding not having to worry about other traffic. I took a trip to the Blue Ridge a few years ago, slipped outa Maine at the end of March, many of the good parts were closed when I got there cause of snow. I need to get back.
Snow - says it all. They had to re-close a bunch of roads in the White Mountains after the snowfall from the last couple of days (Mt Washington set a record for snowfall in May and for single 24-hr period in May). When they close roads to 4-wheel vehicles, you definitely don't want to mess around using two-wheel vehicles!
Maybe but I know how that road is, there are some shaded areas where the snow is really deep....I'd love to ride it with no other vehicles, there are switch backs where you're in first gear and there is no center line for miles........Check out this link. I rode over 300 miles today, not one stop light......This was the first really nice day in a long time. Hwy 120 west into Yosemite closed due to snow.... Hwy 120 east of Mono lake....Volcanoes. .
The end of Hwy 120 east at Benton hot springs. Heading west on Benton crossing road into Long valley.....Long valley is a super volcano caldera.....The World's 6 Known Supervolcanoes
I took a nice little 250 mile ride out to western Mass yesterday to pick up another Ride New England stamp at Ronnie's HD in Pittsfield Mass. Took all sorts of back roads through tiny little towns that time, industry and America in general left in the '50s. It was great! Here's a pic or two from the ride.
Discovered a fuel leak under my bike...dripping from a puke tube under the bike which I traced back to the charcoal can under the seat. The good people at "chromeheads.com" have been a great source of info. A flooded charcoal can is indicative of the in-tank vent line coming apart and/or overfilling the tank. All the parts I need are on the workbench and disassembly was started yesterday. I'd also ordered a set of the chrome plated brass quick disconnects to ease any future fuel tank removals.
This past sunday I went on a 320 miler with friends. Leader had pre loaded 3 different routes for us to follow. The second wouldn't load right so he went by memory. Took a wrong turn and ended up on stone/dirt, again. Pic taker told me how dirty my Duc got, knowing how long I detailed the bike the day before... I had to let him know he was number 1 in my book.
And I finally broke down and got the missing heat shield for the exhaust. I've melted 2 pairs of boots so enough was enough. And a new pair of sox... I will not say how much I paid for that... 1/2 the cost was my birthday present.
OhioStihl is correct. '02 r1200c w/less than 4k miles on it. The chore at hand isn't too bad, I don't mind fettling with my bike. These BMW's aren't like an old shovel where you can run down to the auto parts store and get a set of points for a chevy that'll fit!! Thank goodness for the innerweb info/purchasing. Been a learning curve for sure. I hope to be up and running next week.
I hear ya on the parts thing for BMW, the good thing is they are known for their parts availability for many, many years, I can still get brand new factory parts for my '76, funny thing is some of the time it's the exact same part that goes in my '94. I've been down for a week waiting for parts, I had an odd and very unsettling O-ring failure. The oil filter is internal and the O-ring seals the canister to the cover so the oil flows to all the right places, this one failed and started spewing oil, I lost about a liter while under way, oil all over the place including the rear tire on a wet and cold day, very surprised I didn't wreck.
