I think both of you are under the assumption that plywood isn't the best countertop material. But I should remind you that it is clearly a step up from cardboard or paper mache.
And, you could actually "step up" on plywood, whereas the other options would be less than ideal as steps. Everything's relative.
It just needs a bit of protection against water (you know those not-quite-dry dishes will end up sitting on there while removing from the dishwasher), then all is good. However, plywood will stand up to the water much better than the other two options presented.
I see your point. I should have gone with the green treated plywood! It would have been pre colored to boot!
Had some time after lunch to work on the cabinets. We decided to build a shelf where the fridge was to use the space best. I roughed up how it will look. I bought some clearance thin set cultured stone panels at Menards (they sell more than detergent yooperdave !) that I'm going to put up after I get the cement board up. My bride said it should we should use it for our German beer glasses so I gave it a test run. My bride is going start staining the shelf and side panel tomorrow.
Those panels look exactly like what we used as back splash at my sons place. Starting to come together quite nicely.
