So many choices :headbang:. Wanna get some hydros. Can't seem to make up my mind. I like the ariens/husqvarna. And I also like the Oregon 28 ton looking for something to take the abuse of almost constant splitting. Without breaking too much of the bank :D any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated

I've got the swisher with a Briggs engine... Got a spring clearance sale on it. Several around here have the MTD variety... it seems from what I gather keep it covered, oil changed, and good fuel, you should be fine...

We have an mtd just like backwoods savage does. It's a good unit. But, the. Gravely/ Ariens one is so well thought out. I'd buy that if I had a choice.
The axles/ wheels are out of the operator's way. Many other units don't have that figured out.

20 tons or so is all you will ever need. Heck, the old Didier splitter I primarily use is only maybe 15 tons and it works great.

I don't think there is a bad splitter out there unless you get a real cheap Chinese made one. Some IMO are laid off better than others. I would also stay away from a Briggs engine. Out of the vertical horizontal I like the Ariens/ Gravely preferably the 27ton with the horizontal crankshaft Subaru. The axle is not in the way as bad as most vertical horizontal splitters. I had a Harbor freight splitter and I liked it. It was comfortable to use and pretty fast, especially for the money. The brave 2 way splitter looks nice.

I just got the Ariens 22t.

I was between Ariens and Husqvarna because I like knowing a can count on a dealer if need be.

Here's the winning points for Ariens
    - 3yr warranty
    - Subaru motor
    - 22,27,34 ton models - everything I read said the 22 does everything they need
    - 22t has one of the fastest cycle times
    - can go vertical or horizontal

I have the huskee 22T from TSC. It has split everything I have cut. It has split up to 42" red oak without too much fuss. Some of the elm gave it a bit of trouble, but it did split them. 6 years and at least 100 cord and still going strong.

Yes, there are many choices, not only with size but price. To me, the biggest mistake people make is to think bigger is better. Not necessarily so in this case. Several of us on this forum have 20 or 22 ton and they are plenty strong enough to do all your splitting.

For sure I recommend getting one that will split vertically; the same way the tree grows. God knew what He was doing so we should follow suit.

Good point. You often lose cycle time for those larger ton models.

I found out why my splitter has a little extra foot. It's for when stubborn people like me lift a big round up, the machine doesn't tip. It was fine with the round but as soon as the ram moved forward, that was weight in the wrong side of the axel....duh! Or you know, I could split vertical haha

I'm about in the 1200 to 1500 range. I'd love and iron and oak. But can't justify the high price tag. I think it's gonna be the ariens 22 ton

I don't think you could go wrong with any mentioned so far. My dad used to say if you can't split it with 22 tons you probably shouldn't be trying to split it. I've never run into a round I couldn't split with the basic MTD 20 ton splitter that is the same as Backwoods Savage Horkn have... So that Ariens/Gravely splitter should be perfect!

In my opinion, 22 ton is all that's needed.
