    i thought I was cutting ash. Boy was I off. But I don't know what it is. Splits easily and smells kind of nice.

    Anyone know what it is?

    Here's another pic. The way it splits reminds me of locust.

    Could it be red oak? Smells like it could be and the grain looks a bit like oak. I'm really because I just found a nice scrounge with a bunch of this stuff.

    The black locust around me doesn't look like that, nor does it split easily. I thought I was looking at some cedar, the grain on that is straight as they come.

    The only big of BL that I split was super easy to hand split, FWIW.

    Yeah I was also leaning towards oak, but I'm not sure. It some kind of ring porous wood but I'm certain that locust, mulberry, and Osage can be ruled out (not yellow/orange enough), and I think its too dark for ash too.

    Red Elm - I've never cut any, but I think the color and bark may be a good match. I've also heard it splits easier than its American cousin, and smells a little better than it's Siberian cousin.

    I've been racking my brain on this... and different pictures? Leafs branches? Going to need a few more clues...

    To me it the bark has some of the features of our ash around here... but the inside meat is still lighter than that.

    But Shawn Curry does bring up a valid point of red elm... bark is a bit off in my mind. It's inside is darker and from my experience it's splits nicely. It does have a nice smell to it.

    Red oak is going to smell good to one person and smell bad to another. I personally like the light vinegar/sour smell...

    I vote red elm. I have some splits in the stacks and one or two rounds left. I'll pop one open and take a pic and post it.

    Was not red elm that I have it was rock elm. Dark in the center. I'm changing my vote to ash as I just saw the pith hole in one of your rounds

    No, not really. One of the ways all trees start to rot is from the center.

    I've got quite a bit of green ash here and the wood looks identical to white. I don't think black ash is that much darker. From what I've seen, red elm bark can range from an ash to sort of walnut look.

    Bark doesn't look like oak and some people think fresh split red oak smells like dog crap... Looks like ash to me.
