    Protected? Poisonous?

Yeah, we have endangered species here too! They sure are!

Nothing poisonous though, thank you U.P. for cold weather!

But I don't understand why they would protect them.

Right on Dave! There are a few down here but very few. However, I have a friend who got bit by one several years ago. They took him to the U of M at Ann Arbor for shots. He was sick for a while but turned out okay.

they protect because they were killed so much years ago,and not many of them were seen, they are more up on the hills in the heather.a lot of dogs get bit by them,so this time of year stay away from the heather.

Also if they are protected they can be used to milk their venom to make antivenin.

Backwoods Savage, I don't have so many around my place like that guy does...... It seems like at least once a week he shows me a picture of one that's near his house..........Every year in the spring and fall they migrate through his place..........I saw 2 dead ones on the road yesterday.......This is why I cut my firewood in the winter......Damm those things!:hair:

When I see snakes I leave 'em be, but we don't have any significant numbers of poisonous snakes in Northern New England (a few timber rattlers and copperheads have been sighted). I could not live in an area where I constantly had to be on the lookout for snakes.

we got some spotted adders (Slightly poisonous) up here in the valley... had a nest of them under a rotten tree stump.. was weed wackin.. they got a little irratated .. killed a couple with the Wacker saw the nest... yup some charcoal and lighter fluid.. now since neighbors works at UVM he brought it in they identified it... he said I should have left them alone ... OK but 100 feet from your house and 1/4 mile from mine... we agreed a good to remove them

Don't think that you don't have rattlers there. They've been spotted by FHC'ers, as well as others in Maine.

I never saw a rattlesnake in Maine, but that doesn't mean anything.
I've seen copperheads though, and I know timber rattlers live especially in the Western area of Wi by the bluffs. I've never seen one there and I spend a bit of time out there since I've got relatives in that area.

The only state with no snakes at all is Alaska.;)

I had to do some research on these. Spotted Adders, are really not adders at all, but rather milk snakes. 100% non venomous, and actually a good thing to have as they eat all sorts of vermin. They are harmless, and actually beneficial.

Funny snake story, I grew up where we had snakes, Black snakes were very common but harmless, Racers were crazy fast, Rattlers would let you know where they were and Copperheads were just plain mean. In the winter, we rarely had ponds freeze.
Fast forward to moving up here to Maine.... I'll laugh out loud at some of my big burly buddy's when they see a tiny Garter snake and haul azz off for a shotgun, and in kind, I'll give them a good laugh when I freak out when (standing on) the ice makes a big rumble and I'm scootin for the shore.
