So this is the wood I found on the beach to use for my fire pit bench posts which I posted over in the DIY forum. I am guessing some sort of hickory but that's only because I don't really have any in my stacks. I have about 6 other species and know em all but this is something I for sure don't have. Straight grain and split oh so easy. Thanks folks!

Color seems to be like black walnut although the bark doesn't. I've never known hickory to be easy to split.

It was only in the water a short time, how long till it qualifies as water wood? And I know it was in just a short time because the neighbor up the creek from where we build our docks dropped it(I think by accident) into the creek and it washed up right where our docks go. My dad set it out to sail and it made its way out the mouth of the creek and washed up right on the beach in front of our cottage, was meant to be I guess.

Coincidentally I had chinee food for dinner tonight, no water chestnuts though. I eat most everything but something about those things seem wrong.

I think you are right sir. Looks a lot like pictures I've been looking at. Bark is a little off but it was a young tree so it wasn't too far textured yet.

This is getting saved for the smoker.

Thats just a good looking piece of wood whatever it is.

And a big yes regarding Chinese food, too. Have to get our "Chinese on" every month or two here.

Looks a bit like red elm to me with that redish brown color, but I could easily be convinced it's pignut also. Bark just seemed off to me for pignut.

Here's a Couple pics of red elm.

That looks like something that grows a lot faster than hickory.
