So I've got to replace my slave cylinder on Ford Ranger. I'm getting my clutch and all that other stuff to go with it. Its been a few years since I've research Clutches. But I want to get a stiffer clutch than a stock one. I use my truck as a truck and pulling my tandem axle trailer, I know its there. I've been looking at the Centerforce clutches. I know that they have a good rep, but is there any other variety to look at? Am I going overboard with this type of clutch? Just curious.
South bend, valair to name a few others to look at. Not sure if you have a dual mass flywheel as a stocker(probably do), but switching will give a better feel and probably some vibration possible noise but will work better.
Spec and luk make heavy duty clutches for rangers I believe. You might be going overboard but isn't that what it's all about. My neighbor has one he beats around everyday on his farm. It got to the point where if he parked on a slight grade the clutch wouldn't hold and the truck rolled away. Finally when it quite moving all together he bought a stock replacement clutch kit and resurfaced the flywheel and it's been going strong since. Just keep an eye on disc material as some are pretty aggressive and can be grabby or wear the flywheel and pressure plate if slipped.
I put a Centerforce in my import @ 60,000 and I'm at about 118 now. Highly recommend them. A little while back we put a Luk in the Jeep on a recommendation from the local trusted Jeep specialist (offroad 4x4 shop). I researched before pulling the trigger and they have a great reputation. If I had it to do over, I'd pick the same.
Did a little research last night. mdavlee - I did notice that Luk comes in various names. cwn877 - read a couple good things about the spec's.... but I've yet to find them on the larger seller site. May have to investigate further on it. Some of those other brands that were named I've never heard of, but availablity might be interesting. I was talking to my buddy, he suggested looking at maybe just rebuilding my old clutch. Then they can make it to my situation. Anybody heard of that?
I never looked into buying a clutch from spec just heard good things about them sorry not much help there. In the past I have rebuilt clutches for construction and farming equipment with good results. I have never done one in an automobile guessing it's not as cost effective but you can make it what you want.
Yup, sometimes that's your only choice when you need a clutch or brakes for some older vehicles...get 'em re-lined. Used to be more common than it is now I believe
Well I splurged and went with CenterForce... so time will tell... how much muscle gain my left leg will be getting....
You won't regret it. If I recall correctly mine was 60% more clamp force but pedal feel was marginally more. It's been a while so don't quite me on that. I do still have the original box it came in so next time I'm in the garage I'll look (out of curiosity).
Late to the party! I had a 87 mustang drag car and had a spec clutch in it. Held up to 10.5 slicks at the track, so it was pretty stout. Im sure the centerforce will give years of good service.
Well clutch is done. All went pretty story book like. The pilot bearing not so much... it was pretty much done... Here is what was left.... So we got it replaced in time. I did find out my left leg shortened up. Had to slide the seat up 2 notches... now that clutch is further down that it use to be.
Looks like ya got your moneys worth outta that one! Might even have left a few pieces of it in Backwoods Savage driveway!
Yea, looking at it.... I got lucky... I'm sure it went out before the slave cylinder went out... The good Lord was looking over me on the trip I'd say...
My old truck needed a clutch and I put Centerforce in it. I don't remember if the clutch pedal feel was different or not. I ABUSED that truck and the clutch was never an issue. Enjoy your ride.
