Yesterday my dad came to get my daughter for the day so I could do some mowing and finish jobs. Then 2 mins later I hear a knock at the door. Its a lady inquiring about wood. She asks if I sell it, I say I don't Im not really selling I plan to get my wood stove in soon. I tell her I'd think about it if she's looking for wood and that she could come back and inquire about it another time. Well this isn't the first time. A lotta people look but don't stop. I got another inquiry as I was working the stacks about a month or so ago. Never put out an advert or anything. How many times do people stop and ask about your firewood?
I've had it happen, and I sold some that way. I never planned to but figured why not. Only sold to one person, the old guy lives about a mile from me so I delivered it to him and helped him stack it. Very satisfying to help an older member of the community. The next season he stopped by and asked my wife about the possibility of using/renting my splitter. That never panned out as I'm not as trusting with my power equipment. Now, I'm seriously considering posting a wood for sale sign as my wife and I are very serious about a move.
My wood stacks are not very visible and I have only been asked one time. I have given some away but I do not sell it.
See I get a lot of this wood for free with some exceptions and Im specific about it. But for what its worth, I thought maybe this is a viable option for later and I can set aside wood that could be specific for selling as well. If you're moving id say try to sell now cus sometimes people get a lot of work out of their wood then time passes and they gotta go and wood is left standing there because they waited too long. Another option for you:lets say someone asks again about your splitter. Counter offer them that they must be willing to submit in cash the value or close to a new splitter for collateral, then they accept damages on their own dime and you could submit that in writing before its all done. Small writing thats signed by both in case he or she wants to take you to court, so make copies. Seems formal but you're not making yourself responsible for others stupidity this way. Then show them the ropes and thats it. I may do that for my splitter but i mean full value $. If someone is Willing to do that, then proceed.
Like MikeInMa our wood is not really visible or at least most of it and we live on a dead end road so even if I stack where some might be seen from the road, very few see it. I have sold wood and probably given more away than I ever sold but I've never had a business for selling wood and don't want one.
That would be $2k!! I have a 34T Huskee. Pretty sure that would turn every one of them away. A simple no thanks is easier for me. And I too haven't paid for any of my wood. A lot being CL scores and some where the owner initially wanted to sell but I offer to clean up the removal mess for free and they get reassurance that I'm not in it to profit, but to keep my family warm. I know what wood and where it is in the stacks, so it will definitely get used by me. You are definitely right... I should get that sign up, today! We expecting high 30's tonight...
Yeah it happens I get it three or four times a season. My favorite is the guy in a cheap white shirt and navy blue pants, driving a nondescript white car, who tries way too hard to talk me into selling him firewood. I know he's from county or the state trying to nail me for for selling firewood without a permit! Nice try dude!
Only recently have my firewood stacks become visible from the road, and so far no one's asked about buying any. Most people here who burn have their sources setup already. I'm not far enough ahead to sell, even if I wanted to.
Well i figure if you say that 2 grand up front first then that'll weed them out pretty quick anyways. I think if you're looking for someone whos desperate to split wood with you and go halfsies on it, what have you got to lose if you're the operator anyways. Anyways i figure you've done good enough in the wood area to know whats up.
Most folks just want it processed here if they wanna buy it and the variety seems to help too. If i score more birch you bet i'll take it. But I guess its for some folks its not feasible because you burn what you process in the spring.
I've been asked a few times but never by anyone seriously interested in buying any. Mostly just incredulous friends and neighbors wondering why on Earth do I have so much firewood. I probably will have a huge surplus once I get cleaned up from the big wind storm we had this spring. But I'll probably end up giving it to my dad and brother in law rather than selling any.
I sold two small loads (1 for camping, 1 for a coworker's brother) a few years ago, and I've given some fire pit wood to neighbors that have helped me out with various tasks, but it's word of mouth or proximity/neighborly friendliness only. I'm in no position to sell from our stacked BTU's otherwise.
You wouldn't think there's enough money in it to actually pay a guy to drive around harassing John Q Woodburner?? That's a load of right there.
I laughed at this. My mothers response was the same, incredulous would be spot on. Thank you for the big reminder that we aren't loco if its a big crowd. I think the great majority aren't even on this site.
Well lets see now. There's the cost of the county business license, then there's state sales tax for which the county gets a cut, then there's the non-refundable county earning tax on your gross sales. So Caesar wants his cut. And yeah, they have a guy that goes around checking to make sure business have their permits and licenses posted and they're up to date. A lot of my wood is in open sight so on his regular rounds through the county he must have spotted it and just thought I was selling wood.
