Yardworks 6.5 ton electric splitter is what I have. If all I was splitting was a cord of wood a year I wouldnt need a splitter but for some of us, doing lots of splitting is hard on the back and shoulders. Ive never used mine on oak or any real hard wood but Ive split some large birch with it and big doug fir and larch rounds with it and never had a problem. Also rounds with big knots in them dont seem to be an issue. I paid around $450 Canadian for mine. They are slower and definitely wont win a speed test with someone who is in shape and splitting next to it but I can go all day with a splitter, even my son was able to use it when he was 9.
Im now curious, is it rated for use with oak because thats what Im wanting the splitter for. I have all this oak i need to cut and split down to managable size.
I actually picked oak off the top of my head knowing its fairly hard wood and isnt referenced from the manufacturer.
Deals do come around if you're patient and quick on the draw. I got a used Huskee 22 ton for $650 that has a couple convenient handles welded on for manual positioning. It has been a life saver for us.
Fatboy, I have the Boss 7 ton electric spitter and used it on a good amount of green red oak from A tree I had cut down on my property, it worked great...
Check out Boss Industrial's website, I believe they might have a reconditioned selection of splitters available. I have heard great reviews about their customer service.
Id do that but no truck. Trailer yes but I'd be wondering how I could route power that would be enough and safe for a splitter. Honestly I think Id only split in my car if I had the time and then having rounds just a bit too big for the trailer.
Result of last night and this midday job. A kinda before .... A little something for Backwoods Savage to see.
Cigar? Yes please. Around my area the birches tend to be more landscape additions so they are knarled as they come. Most wild birch is said to be straight as a flagpole, consistent stuff but the rounds were actually ok until you get to the trunk and knots aplenty. I threw some seasoned large stuff on my pit last night. Whew warm.I found some white birch last june, pile of it was just randomly sitting out. Now having split it into pretty good small splits, its waiting to be burned in my new stove this year. It'll be nice to see that warming up the house.
Cigars and a few ice cold pints are in order for sure. Ya pretty much any birch around here are planted for show.
