have been planted. Wife and SisIL have REALLY wanted these, so we picked up 10 and split the cost. Just about 2 bucks apiece. Not super happy about where they got planted, but I had limited options, so tis what it tis. Made some chicken wire cages to keep the bunnies and deer from chewin' 'em up.
Yeah, maybe shoulda sprung for the 25 pack, but I have absolutely NO idea where we'd put 12 Walnut trees. 5 was tough enough. SisIL has a HUGE back yard and a HUGE front yard too, so she could put 'em all over the place and still have room.
Any concern with the toxin the tree releases affecting other plantings? What's it called jugla? Juglera? Jugleone? They are beautiful trees though.
Yeah, juglone. Not really a concern. Evidently, it's concentrated mostly under the canopy, but the canopy can be 50' or more dia. There are a few trees within that, but they're all coming down at some point before the Walnuts get too large.
Look on the negative side....."Oh my gawg, look at all the walnuts everywhere". Positive side....."Oh my gawg, look at all the walnuts everywhere". Yep, the lines are blurred.
Little update almost a month later. These things are doing pretty well, and have already grown 3-4". I was starting to worry they wouldn't bud. Guess I dun sumpthin' right, eh?
Walnuts make beautiful trees. I see 'em as replacement for all the ash we've lost here. Ya done good, papadave.
Thanks. We think so. One of 'em has developed a little black on a few of the leaf tips, but they all seem to be growing pretty well. That one gets more shade than the rest. With the heat, I had to give 'em all some water today. Perked right back up within an hour or so.
Well, the dry has dried up. Rain, rain, rain, has kept me from watering. I can see I'll need to make the cages larger in diameter. These things are growing like weeds (actually, there are no weeds....only plants where I don't want em'), especially the one that gets the most sun. I think there's enough chicken wire left for at least the 3 in the yard. If these don't get at least a foot taller by the end of the growing season, I'll be shocked. Happy camper here.
