Ice storm just took out the power. I have a out 5 days of wood in the house, a lot more outside. Burning candles for light, saving the fuel in the oil lamps in case this is an extended outage. We have charged USB power supplies (Coleman brand), marine battery, and it's cold enough outside to store food. Don't worry about us, we will be cooking on the wood stove tonight just like any other night.
Yeah, you're a pretty resourceful guy. Wasn't worried at all. We were out of power last winter from Thurs. to Monday. Cooked on the stove, went to bed early, stayed warm, and did a lot of reading. A lot. Stay warm.
Hope you get power back soon.. I hate losing power! Need to start my day with a shower.. Bought a small genny and hope it isn't needed..
Forecast is for a windy night tonight, so I went out and blasted a path around to where I plug in the generator. Figured it was better to do it in the afternoon instead of 2am. Plus, if I'm prepared, I won't need it. I'd probably be okay overnight, but I have sump pumps that need to run eventually. Glad you're back up, Adam. I had to google the olive oil lamp. Pretty slick.
You know, I don't mind losing power for a few hours. There is a certain quietness that you normally do not get with all the electronics going in this world.
I remember one winter when the power went out and the entire family camped out in the stove room. Really cozy, kids loved it. Then in the middle of the night the power came back on and every light in the house came on. Kids just wanted to shut the lights off and make believe the power was still off. Being prepared has its advantages! But then everyone on this forum knows that.
Adam, how do the kids do in the dark. Homework? I bought a generator. It is still in the crate. One on my kids would get it going if I needed it. Can't do much while on crutches and a brace. I just hope all these upgrades will be the insurance I need to not need them!
They are with their mom right now and they have power. I don't think it would upset them much, we don't get shook up easily.
Wood burners don't get to rattled when power is out. Battery back up is a good addition with the new age of electronics. See lots more installing batteries & inverters . Several days before it's noticed much . Many pellet burners doing the same, couple marine batteries & an inverter, several days worth of power.
It's fun it is. At least until the wife starts to get grumpy.... I could live off grid no prob she can do it for about a day before she starts to get grumpy. Lol
