Went out to split the other day and after a couple of logs the engine started to make a horrible racket.
Thought I blew the engine. After looking things over noticed the love joy.
Did a little research to educate myself on love joys since I've never had one go bad on me.
It's a Huskee splitter with a Honda verticle shaft engine. When I called Speeco to find out about ordering replacements guy told me they never made one with a verticle Honda engine. Well I got it at TSC and am the original owner.
He said nope never made em that way And I'd have to take it apart to Find sizes of shafts.
Well I did and they are 1/2 on pump and 7/8 on motor.

Checked all over online and they were pricey and not often sold as a pair.
Finally went to love joy mfr website and found a dealer near me. Called, read them the numbers stamped on metal of love joy, and was told they'd ship to me in a couple of days
Figured I'd post this cause I didn't come up with much on love joys when I searched site.

When I got it at TSC they were just trying out a couple of Hondas . I'm sure it was new and never used when I got it.
Must be 10 years ago. This has been a great splitter. Probably over a hundred cords split between my kids and me

    Yes
Speeco, Huskee and County Line were all made by Speeco and sold by TSC

You are correct and I called them. I was told to take it apart and measure shafts. They could send them for $49.00 plus shipping -don't know about taxes. Not sure if that included the rubber spider too. was never mentioned

here's pic of lovejoy distributer invoice. shipping was $8.00
this was the best price by far. On amazon they're much much more

If they make them, why did they tell you they didn't build one like that?

I don't know. The guy said he never saw one vertical shaft. Don't know how long he worked there. You know thinking about this the guy just kept hedging and telling me I had to take it apart no measure it. I don't think he knew too much. It's hard to tell how much someone knows, especially over the phone
I couldn't find and Id numbers except for a metal plate under I beam.
Fine by me If the engine goes I can replace with a Honda clone from Harbor Freight

When I was in the machine shop business, Lovejoys were standard fare for motor couplings. They're very forgiving of misalignment. We were routinely boring and broaching for odd combinations. They're made from sintered metal (powdered metal pressed into a mold and heated to the point were it fuses). Don't believe I've ever seen one fail as completely as yours. I'm surprised you didn't hear something before the death rattle. You got a good price for an odd combination.

MrWhoopee didn't hear anything till it went. But I was wearing headphones with tunes playing
Did find 2 of the metal teeth sheared off and they were only 1/8 inch thick so it was really worn down. Don't really understand how it wore so much with the rubber spider there

brenndatomu I'm in the center of Long Island NY called every repair shop close and all tool rentals and no one had any. Then I started with Amazon and eBay and finally company website. The dealer listed on company website is only a few miles away. They didn't have it in stock but are sending from Albany 4 hrs away.

clemsonfor none of the repair shops said they replaced them and couldn't help me with where to order.
I did find the on Northern tool website they were much cheaper than lovejoy but clearly aftermarket so no confidence in them!

Lovejoy couplings are a common thing passing through our shop. You can look it all up online but....
The L- number is the series or body diameter. L-075 for instance is 1 3/4" o.d. and coupled 2 1/8" L. The problem is that the horsepower rating with a Buna insert at 3600 is probably less than 4. Coupled with a pulsing power source derating the service factor it's a surprise more of these don't break. Substituting in a urethane spider increases HP capacity and oil resistance. Also all standard jaw couplings interchange ie. 1/2 Lovejoy 1/2 Browning with surplus center rubbers all work together. I think I see pry marks on the removed coupling half, try not to pull, press, hit or utter verbal offense towards your pump shaft. They are a lot more sensitive on the inside than you would think.

Screwloose very good info, thank you
Have cleaned up motor and pump shaft with Dremel wire wheel good amount of rust there

you do see some pry marks on 1/2 lovejoy from pump. was so tight to pump I couldn't get puller on.
ended up grinding arms of puller to make them fit under. Tried using 2 screwdrivers on opposite sides no good
    got it off with puller

Any advice on putting them on?
They were tough coming off. shafts now are clean and smooth.
Do the new ones slide on easily or do I have to press them on?

I believe i would've went with another coupling. Those love joy brand are high. You probally could've picked up some couplings right there at tsc that would have done the job for half the price, or a northern tool.
