I got on a Craigslist score this week and thought I was going to get my first opportunity to noodle but the tree guys cut the pieces just small enough I could still man handle them into the truck. Another day.... haha
2 of my fav saws for noodling. Mid 70's Mac 125C & late 70's Homie 750. Replaced original clutch cover on the 125C with a modified one for better chip clearance.Even in normal crosscutting the standard one would plug up quite rapidly.
I had some massive Maple rounds from a CL add today. Probably 40" diameter. The biggest ones had been noodled long ago, but still too much for me to move into the truck. I didnt want to make a mess in the guys yard, so I ended up wedging them all apart. Drove the isocore into the round where I wanted to put the wedge, then pounded the wedge through with far too many swings for my out of shape azz.
Craigslist is hit and miss. Earlier this year I responded to an add for "large oak firewood pile" when I called he said it will fill your trailer and then some! By pile I thought he meant a pile on the ground but he failed to tell me that it was a pile still standing in need of being cut and piled up. The PILE was hanging over his garage and house and was box elder. Needless to say it stayed there..
I'm currently dealing with a similar sized maple, toughest wood I ever tried to split. To save time, I'm noodling it down to quarters and splitting it on site with my gas splitter. I don't care what anyone else says about that. And the 590 can go all day on noodles, the only time I have to stop is when the pile reaches the saw.
I had an old Mac back in the day. Loud, no chain break, bad azz saw. Loved it then. But now I'm old and like my Stihls. Chief
We removed and noodled up a big oak stump at Dennis's GTG Saturday evening after doing a twin trunk removal. Used my old Stihl Contra with the 42" Oregon roller tip bar and the Pioneer RA with the 36" bar. cwn877 has some pics and video of it. That stump was around 50" across or so at the very base, way to big to just leave there for Dennis to have to wrestle around. I like to block up big wood sometimes, but I also like to just deal with it at the splitter.....I relish the challange. Big crotches and knots get the noodle treatment.
Ready to see those pictures Scotty. Even though I will probably get to see the pieces in person sometime this summer .
