Hey G, not to dump on your afternoon, but since you were notified about that counterfeit battery in the XPS 17 - you may want to strongly consider at least pulling that battery from the laptop, while away from home.. And sticking it in an anti-static bag and putting it in the middle of a metal bucket, filled w/ sand.. Li-Ion fires are really nasty. Seriously. Nothing I'd want to be screwing around with. Just trying to look out, is all.

Thanks Rob. weird thing here is that for the past 4-5 weeks, I had an uneasy feeling about charging the laptop while not at home. It was normal for me to plug it in and go to bed, go to work, whatever. I stopped doing that few weeks ago and then I get the notification from Amazon.

Agreed that these batteries can be dangerous, are there any that you would feel safe charging while unattended?

This battery wasnt a supposed Dell unit. The brand is LQM and had pretty good ratings

Sure, Dell OEM. 6 cell or 9 cell. Either one, in original Dell packaging, w/ the inspection & warranty bar code labels present & intact, like this:

    Dell 312-1127 WHXY3 90Wh 9-Cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery for Dell XPS 13 / XPS 14 (L401X) / XPS 15 (L501X) / XPS 15 (L502X) / XPS 17 (L701X) / XPS 17(L702X) Laptop - Brand New

    --

Or Anker. or SiKER. Nothing wrong w/ aftermarket batteries, if the manufacturing quality control is good.

Like most budget-level packs, they use 'standard' grade Li-Ion cells in the pack, one can expect battery life to slowly start to degrade after about 6-8 months, expected EOL is typically 1.5 - 2 years, give or take. Construction quality and QC is good though.

If not OEM (or budget) here's another choice:

    http://www.safebatteries.com/dell-xps-15-l501x-extended-9-battery-j70w7-jwphf-r795x-whxy3.html

You pay for the Panasonic cells in these battery packs. But excellent OE (or better) quality.. Former co-worker / business colleague in NJ likes & praises these batteries: uses them in a large IT deployment. * I haven't used them yet, here.

    --

Not trying to spread FUD here G - battery recalls are nothing new (think Samsung) - it's just that in the case of being notified like you were: abundant caution is best.

    * I don't see -any- new LQM brand laptop batteries up on Amazon - they must have pulled them all.

    Time for a new battery.

Yeah, no LQM batteries available. I tried finding info on the recall but found nothing.

Frankly at this point I am leery of buying any Dell labeled battery that isnt available on Dell;s website, I just dont trust it enough to pay the extra $$. If it is a Genuine Dell, why arent they selling it?

I am interested in the listing on safebatteries website. If these are in fact Panasonic batteries that are made in Japan then they are likely very reliable. I use AA and AAA Eneloop (Panasonic) batteries and always try to buy the versions made in Japan, they have a better track record.

The Siker battery looks attractive in price. If the last a while and are safe, that might be a good choice.

I'm supposed to get a big box today :ups:. Sadly, it is for next winter so I'll just get to look at it longingly for a while.

Oh yeah, and tomorrow I'm picking up a CL find of an almost new mower (2 YO) that is the same type as my broken one, but with more HP. I'll still get my old one to the shop for fixing at some point and will use that one for getting around the stumps/rocks in the yard as that is what killed it in the first place. The new mower will cost me 1/2 what a new one goes for and about the same as what I figure fixing the old mower will take (plus new blade and oil change). :emptywallet:

Old mower is a Craftsman 6.0 Gold self-propelled, fwd mower/mulcher
New mower is a Craftsman 7.25 Gold self propelled, fwd mower/mulcher

Can't answer that specifically G - would be worth a call to Dell to ask, w/ your system info. available.

Link posted is a good example of a genuine battery w/ labels, print screening, etc. though.

    Best guess:

    * Dell shifted their inventory focus a number of years back, "older" model parts & supplies are quickly liquidated to the secondary market supply chain, many parts I purchase for laptop repairs here come from VARs that keep old-stock inventory: or from overseas, for this reason.

I like Panasonic batteries also, they last a long time in electronics here. ( For the few extra $$$ vs. 'box store' offerings, it would be worth it here. )
Glad the info/link is useful to you.

Cant find any Anker 9 cell. In fact on Ankers website, it looks awfully bare for any laptop battery selections? As in maybe 5?

    Am I missing something here?

^^ Not missing anything G - rather than trying to make (every) battery: they choose to VAR the most popular of select series batteries, and do it well.
    (Example: HP Pavilion series battery.)

Umm, yeah, it is. But at least I'm ahead of the game on that one (I.e., not waiting for white chit to fall before working on it). Got a good price and free delivery. Will have someone pick up the old white chit removal machine and see what it takes to fix it. I'm guessing it will be more expensive than I deem worth, but if it isn't too expensive, then I'll have a spare - just like CleanFire
