Im taking a close look at pain and hard work, the two meet but they shouldn't be excruciating. I'll know ive worked hard when my hands tingle in the morning. It's really because I have all this wood to split and taking care of the difficult splits would be where that splitter comes in. No sense in whacking a rock if its not gonna crack. A day or two and Im golden. If I find one on CL for super cheap, I'll use that. Preventing the wear and tear later will make up in longevity.
I don't know about making charcoal - never tried to - but I do use a mix small birch and oak splits in my charcoal grill to cook over the wood coals. I'm a fan! Cheers!
This is only 2/3'rds of the new supply. No pic for the first pile but the trailer shows that. Ive got it all above ground just waiting for a better day to split, most of my splits just fly and catch a lot of mud. Not favorable. Next up, splitting.
I see cherry blossoms in the back of the picture! I cant wait until we get blossoms here. I agree, splitting in the muck isnt a lot of fun.
We had 3 days starting last Thursday with sunshine so it was really nice but still cold at night so im using my heaters off and on. Those Cherry trees are nice around here, need to think about planting some. My yard is bare!
We have white here but not from blossoms. It is called albino rain. But it shouldn't be too long before we will have things green up.

Yes it is. I might do some splitting next week but will wait for most of it to do during the GTG so guys can try out different splitters if they so choose. If they don't want to do much splitting, then I'll get it done after they leave. I still want to cut down a soft maple so that I can demonstrate how I make kindling with that using the hydraulics. Maybe someone can video some of it?
Get someone who's got a GoPro, you can wear it while you work and all these folks can see your skilled hands making us look bad!
Things have been coming along on this. Every other night or so I pick 15-20+rounds to bust and then just stack. Someone asked a question about the cord timing. Im closing in on 12 hours with this stuff. If you double the stack on the left that I have on another pallet in the yard thats whats unsplit. Just been grabbing the small rounds from there and keeping my work smarter tempo here. The sawn pieces are extremely tight. Knots. The splitter will come in the mix soon enough.
Thank you! Its slow but I just keep it simple by splitting it once and hoping that is the only size i'll need for stove. If it does't, junk bin.
Well I have another pallet that is about 10 feet long holding the wood I'll start burning fall. These have two of those same kind of pallets so Im suspecting its 20 feet. I tried measuring it but the tape got floppy after 17. The pallet with the fall wood is very close to a cord. If I tie some other wood that is stacked for the same purpose is probably covering the rest. I would say 2 1/2 cord by the time I'm done...the trailer hauls were stacked and HEAAAAVY. All that water I'm pulling. Well I'll be happy when I really get the rest of the wood that I still have to process done. Im kinda fascinated how many cord Ive picked up in the past...year. This is also including what I've burned up as well!
While in the Air Force I visited a pub in England. The bartender says to menus you boys are going to love what I have, imported beer : Great looking wood scrounge. Tough work swinging that axe. Your going to love the splitter when you get one. Do you know the crew?
Don't know them but the guy did ask if in the future if another opportunity came up, he'd give me a heads up. All I can say is that Im needing to figure out how to use my yard space well. Yeah I am thinking I should rent. Its hard finding a splitter in the $3-600 range that isn't in pieces. But with a couple days in the summer with that I think it would get me ready to go. I just need to focus on that for a couple days and get the wood shed built.
