Sounds like a good solution to me but where can I source any softwoods? All I can find are yard plantings. In my45 or so acres of woodlot I think I once spotted a small cedar in a difficult location. If I cut it there might be 1/4 cord unless I get picky about how small I am willing to go. Then there will be maybe 5 or 6 rounds.
Around here Craigslist is fruitful for pine especially. The "evil pine" myth is in full effect in berkshire county MA, so much so that many of the free pine ads come with a disclaimer: "fire pit or outdoor boiler use only!!" I love it. I have had a few deliveries from landscapers just wanting to get rid of the stuff because homeowners won't keep it, and they can't give it away any other way. Had a small time logger stop by once also - he brought me four dump truck loads of the cutoffs that were clogging his landing.
