Yeah, its got quite a bit of Oak, but right now I'm just taking nuisance trees. Those that are down/bent/leaners/or in his way...
I gave a lot away to some needy familys this year so I have some major catchup to do too. It will have to wait for spring now there is just to much snow everywhere to get in the woods.
I'm trying to decide if I can go back home and pick up that wood that I cut this fall this weekend. Our snow is gone, but the ground is a big sloppy mess. Hoping it might get back down below 32 degrees to solidify it enough to get it out. Will see.
The ground has been right here....but with so high drifted snow..the old RTV says "no way! " But at least the wood is stacked nice and neat up against trees .....with a little head start on drying !!!! Impatience seems to either get a fella stuck...or with too many ruts to fill later Man..am I sounding older and wiser !!! I gotta stop that
Yep wisdom comes with age........ But since that wood (from this fall) comes from a Uncles land, I'm not going in until I know that I'm not going to track...Otherwise, I'll never hear the end of it...
I'm cutting dead standing oak that mostly died starting about 5 years ago. Most ( especially those that are still vertical) I've watched a few withering on my own property and they don't all just die all at once, although I've seen one leaf out in Spring, drop the leaves and it was over. I've used the splitter to chop off punky parts on those that fell. If it's a hardwood and at least 50% good I'll spend my time on it. I don't mind leaving some standing/leaning/horizontal for the bugs and birds. I'm getting by with an 026pro, every now and then borrowing an 066 for anything that would take forever nibbling away with a short bar. Nothing here is horribly huge as I'm pretty sure with all the stone walls around this was planted fields at one time.
I hear that for sure !! Thats why I dont go get the stuff outta mom and dads woods till its nice and dry !!!!
Wood stacked nice and neat is good but not so good up against trees. Never stop being wiser but stop the aging if you can.
Whats wrong with stacking against trees ?? As far as the aging thing...I wish I new how to stop that !!
It harms the trees they are stacked against. Mother Nature sometimes likes to send us wind. That wind will cause the trees to bend and sway. That, of course, is one of the strengths of the trees; the ability to give rather than be totally solid. So when the trees bend and sway, the wood that is piled against them does not bend and sway but will rub on the bark of the tree. Bark gets rubbed off, that makes an excellent place for insects to enter the tree. I think you get the idea.
