If you think of a small diameter tree that is pulled over and attached to a snare for an animal. A spring pole is a small diameter tree that is stuck under a tree that was just felled. Tremendous potential energy that if released improperly (I.e. Mistakenly as in this case) can hurt or kill as we learned with LodgedTree
Not the best video but you get the idea.

Been there done that. Woke up , saw running , bleeding from the head. Same story getting home. Called 911 etc. Now here is the weird part - knew I was hurt bad - help on the way - I decided that I must have clean clothes to ware to go the emergency room. Got undressed and passed out again, next thing I remember is the emt asking my wife how did this chainsaw accident happen when I was naked. I just passed out again, one fractured eye socket later , twenty stichies and two days observation later I went home and stayed there for a week.
    I feel your pain.

Yeah us loggers must be weird. I got 911 on the way, but had to hang up on them to make sure someone went up and shut the skidder off. All I could think about was that skidder idling for hours upon hours...

Well, that just shows your will to survive. If you didn't make it, it wouldn't have mattered if it was left running. Since you were planning to make it to cut another day, you were saving yourself another trip to town to buy more ORD. Thinking ahead is a good thing.

I'm so glad you're gonna be ok. Just don't tell my wife about this. We'll be burning oil.
