I don't want to not say something here but I'm at a loss for words....you have my support in your efforts to eat healthier and add small amounts of activity to your already tiring day. As one of the FHC family we'd love to see that number shrink as you do....took awhile to get there so it will take awhile to shake it but it has been done....you have years ahead of you and a family and friends who care....my best to you....

Yup, I have a couple of doctors on it trying different things. For many years I have been hurting and my reluctance to take pain meds has made me "sloth like". RA is a b@#$&, I could make a good weather guesser.

I would try to rule out medical or thyroid conditions as mentioned, or try to find a way around your medication (can you switch?).

What foods satisfy your hunger, and which leave you wanting more? I found a few things interesting in my case. Stuff like bread I can eat and eat and never feel full. I could eat a loaf of bread or tons of pasteries and never feel full. Yet, a can of sardines with a handful of crackers will keep me trucking along for some time. Same with beef jerky, eggs etc, so I'm guessing protein really works for my hunger.

There's also cutting portions, or eating slower to set off the I'm full signals earlier.

I was the fat kid too, I'm 5'8", I topped out at 250lb in my early 30s. Something clicked, my brother had a heart attack, that rung my bell, I had two young kids, an amazing wife, a brand new house, great job, life was good, except....I just decided I wasn't going to be fat anymore and then made it so. I wish I could tell you there is a magic bullet, I don't believe there is, just a lot of hard work and determination...you can do it!

Well, a couple years ago I topped out at 234. Then during late winter of 2016 I got really sick and was at 224 but before it was done I weighed in at 182. I did get back up to around 188-190 for quite some time but then the pain got much worse and I could not be very active so I got over 200 again. Right now I'm at 197 so if I can get relatively active with the warmer temperatures hopefully I can keep it in check.

Screwloose no doubt much of the medicine can be one of your biggest problems. I had that happen too. But sometimes it can be really difficult especially with pain and you have much with RA. We seem to have several members here with RA and I pray for all of them. That is an awful thing for anyone to have. About the only thing I have to offer is to highly advise to keep as active as possible. For sure walking is one of the very best activities even if you have to start at 100 yards per day; it is something. I remember after having 3 hip surgeries that walking was difficult but had to be done. It works when you can do it.

They tell me normally breads are one thing to stay away from if trying to lose weight. Same thing for pop.

Well I do love breads and I have a sweet tooth. I need to try and eat throughout the day instead of only one meal at night when I crap out. Hard to imagine walking as helping as I walk/stand all day but if it ever dries up I'll be getting out more. Thanks for all the replies

Several things come into play here. First, make sure you have had a good physical. Need to determine if their are contributing factors. Next, you need support. I.e. a group called TOPS (www.tops.org) Another is to see psychologist. Baring having a physical condition that contributes, many times we are dealing with other problems. Another thing is to see a dietician. Now to be dead honest, most folks can follow diets for a while, but without changing life style, you will be right back where you started. The next thing is most drastic, but has the most lasting success. Bariatric surgery. It is proven to be the most successful in the long run. Lets face it, you are not out to loose a few pounds. You are out to loose nearly half your body weight. Four people in my family have had the surgery with good outcomes. One is a phycologist, one teacher, one nurse and one drunk (now sober). I have one brother who is 400 lbs plus who was going to have the surgery, but came up with every excuse he could think of. He is now recovering from a big stroke. He is 63. This is a lot to think about. I am way overweight. When I was 50, I was at a good weight. I got depressed, gain a ton of weight, got injured from a fall, and was close to helping myself out of this life. I did all those things I recommended to you except for the surgery. Now too high a risk for surgery. Can't even have it to fix my injury. I lost some wt, then got encouraged and lost more. now down 59 lbs from where I was in 2015. I am on a low carb diet, plus I go the pool and swim 4 times weekly. There is help for you. You have to want to be helped and be willing to make life style changes.

Sorry savemoney, I didn't see this until now. I've never heard of Tops so I will look into it. Never thought of a psychologist, that sounds interesting. I did weight watchers for a while and "misplaced" around 60# or so. My wife had bariatric surgery and one of her friends had it twice now. I don't have the balls to do that, my wife has to corner me just for my RA injections. Plus I'm a self employed machine/fab/job shop owner and I'm not in a position to shut myself down financially. I am under two different doctors care, one general and one for RA. I've only been recently diagnosed with RA as I have complained for years about pain but it was attributed to my aggressive work style. X-rays, blood tests ect. showed only wear and tear so I got pain meds. Then one day it was suggested that I do a two hour MRI on my hand. Next thing I'm hit with is "you have the type of RA that doesn't show in the blood work" "we also found out that you have fibromyalgia" and deteriorating joints.
So now I have been taking more pills than cereal in the morning, and my wife gets to stab me but I'm feeling better. Side effect of one drug is hunger so I'm trying to eat plain oatmeal, apples ect. I did loose eleven pounds since last Monday but the trick is to not find them again.
Thank you for your concern, I do appreciate it.

Interaction of various pills for this that and everything else can cause difficulties - each person is unique in their response to said chemicals- The rub is the docs really don't have a clue what your system response will be to the chemical cocktail. It becomes a pure trial and error system. It is imperative that you note changes and discuss same with docs.

Yuppers. That is one reason they call it "practicing" medicine. Lots of unanswered questions.

Interesting, a Tops meeting is held very close to me. Embarrassing part is that the scale weight capacity is about 100# less than I am.
