Welcome CanadianShield, What part of the province do you call home? I settled in southern Ontario for work but this same job takes me to almost every corner of the province and sometimes beyond. The snow has been gone for a few weeks down here in the banana belt but still lots in the bush not to far north of us.
We call them spring peepers and they are frogs. I heard some in a pond on Monday down near Niagara Falls when it was 20 C (68 F) but didn't hear anything on Wednesday when we had a cool west wind and a high of about 5 C (40 F).
Home is not as far north as Hudson Bay, yet not as far west as Wawa, nor am I as far east as Cornwall or as south as Pellee Island . Still plenty of snow up here. Need snowshoes to get out back in the hills still. Driving me nuts because I still have plenty of logs to haul down.
Yup, Spring Peepers are a specific kind of frog in vernal pools, but I can't remember the name. They are peeping hot and heavy round these parts. It's a sign of spring looked forward to in NH.
"It's eating off the value menu" That's great! 32* here with light frost, no fire as the sun will warm us up to the mid 50's soon. I be firing up the splitter shortly.:stacke:
43 More 'pane. Might put the cap on the wood furnace chimney soon. Will use the shoulder stove if need be. Will be planting spinach and romaine this weekend . Cant wait. Still feeding Dads OWB! Grrrr!
NH do ya call them peepers or spring peepers? gramps (farmer north east of St, Johnsbury) that's the NH border near the top always called them peepers.. they were sign to pull sugar taps and till the fields..
That's unfortunate MrWhoopee (unless you "dig" the snow as I do!). Does look pretty though. 14 C today, 23 in the house. Losing lots of snow today, probably be able to go fetch me "fellers" in a couple days!
Now that's a cool way to gauge the necessary outdoor chore - gotta love nature, who needs a calendar! 14 C here today, no sign, or sound, of peepers yet! Couple of weeks i guess.
so ENE of Peterborough abouts if I remember right.. been a few years since I went to London, Ontario and visited friends along the way!
Yeah, Cornwall is ENE of Peterborough, I'm NNW of Peterborough quite a way. London eh, pretty sure they had a green winter. The in laws live in S Ont and had trees budding in Jan for crying out loud.
Welcome aboard. Peepers are horny little frogs. I have a dear friend that lives in Rhode Island, 50 miles south of me, that I worked with 10+ years ago. We only talk a couple times a year anymore but when we do it's driven by events. And one of them is the spring peepers. He usually gets his about 5 days before I get mine. Right now it's in full chorus.
Mile down the road peepers out but still none at my house, I run a little colder here and still some snow kicking around And plenty wet land around...It's all good cause I have screaming in my ears all the time so I think I am hearing chit but I step outside and not....
