Your ground your business! As long as it is safe to shoot in the direction intended, not breaking any rules and your neighbors don't have a problem with it than go for it. It would be nice however to give your neighbors within ear shot of the noise a heads up.

After all you do want to keep the peace with your neighbors because you'll never know when you need to ask them for a favor.

A friend of mine cut the Spruce down and was gonna toss it in the woods out back of his place. So, I said I'll take that thank you very much! I just loaded it, he had cut it. I would hope no FHC member would ever limb like that.:hair::rofl:

I should clarify that my closest neighbor is quarter mile away. While most of em own .3 acre lots, all of the lots are nestled in hundreds of acres of meadowland in a valley. I shoot into a hill that I own that goes from 7500 ft to 8100ft. In order for someone to end up in front of one of my bullets they would have to be trespassing and we would have seen them coming from half a mile away the way my place rests half way up the hill.

Not sure that 5 acres is 500ft x 500ft, my driveway alone is 300ft long....

So sure enough 5 acres is less then 500ft x 500ft. I am wondering if my land is measured wrong because it sure seems like we have more area then that. I took this pic in Google maps to show you how I was shooting. My house is the last one on the end with the tiny blue dot. I own all the land behind the three houses before mine and half the land behind the 4th. My land extends then along the border of my closest neighbor there down to the creek. It then follows the creek to the boarder of the national forrest which you can see goes on as far as you can see. When shooting off mh porch the rounds go into the hill to the right of my house about 75 feet away. You would have to cross my drive and climb the hill to get there. 1491023160841_1491023196681.jpg

So just looking at things I could hit while shooting off my porch, as this pic shows, with the right angle and a big enough gun I could hit the Stanley hotel. ( my house is the blue dot)

I think our land is something like approximately 1000 ft by 225 ft in a weird shape.

We shoot about 3-4 times a month, sometimes more in the summer, and host a machinegun shoot once or twice a year. My neighbors are used to it. Also, we usually have a couple deputies, several attorneys and an occasional judge at the shoot. So if the neighbors had a complaint, it would be funny for the responding deputy to question his Lt. or road Sargent.

The rest of the year my range is open to the Sheriff's Dept for their private personal use, since they can only use the range they qualify at during their qualifications. I just had a deputy out on Thursday testing a new light weight AR build. There are a couple of guys on the dept who shoot here three or four times a year.

Zero guilt, whether I'm shooting an American 180 (full auto .22) or my Barrett M-82CQ.

I don't see an issue. Looks like you have plenty of safe space to shoot, depending on where you aim.
My neighbors have their own ranges, class 3 stuff going hot is music to my ears. But, other neighbors are not fans. The sheriffs dept. has been called in the past but as long as there is a safe backstop, nothing they can do. No HOA here.
If my range wasn't so close, I'd build one on my property and I'm only on an acre. My guess is your complaining neighbor hasn't been here that long or a displaced Boulderite.
Don't get me started on them..... I say shoot to your hearts content and don't sweat it. JB

I found out that the neighbor did complain to the HOA. Good to be friends with the board members. Paul spent 20 minutes explaining to him why I am allowed to do it and why he was not going to come over and tell me to stop. I still need to go introduce myself with some cookies in hand so I don't have an enemy in the meadows.

Good to hear. Better yet, invite them over to shoot a few .22's. They'll find out it's fun, help them get over their hoplophobia.

great idea Handsonautotech .. I had a neighbor come up this weekend and ask us too shoot... OK why.. got a new horse in pasture was going to work with him in ring... wanted some shots to see what horse would do while in ring instead of on road.. ah ok... tried to pay for bullets... ah no .... started with 22 went to 12 gauge and 30 06.. he came back with a fifth... I had a brush pile burning... talked for a while...

    good neighbors where I live..

It is not the shooting, it is the noise. Some folks are more sensitive to noise than others; I am one of the sensitive ones. I agree with silencers and think they should be legal because it is about the noise. I have a neighbour that is a good distance away but he/she shoots some high power stuff. What gets me is when he/she and friends shoots for hours on end; after a bit my nerves starts to get frazzle. When it is shoot a bit, stop, shoot a bit, stop, it does not bother me as much because I get a rest from the noise. I don't care they are shooting, I just wish it was not so freaking loud and going inside does not really help much. I have had to put in ear plugs to help cut down the noise; my friend looks at me a bit strange on the noise issue but I am sensitive to noise.
I have a nice place for shooting; a hillside that to reach the top would mean pointing the rifle straight up. I don't own a rifle, they are too expensive and dang one can burn through some money with the cost of some of the rounds.
