Someone on craigslist posted this and says its black locust. I have some and it doesn't look like this. Seems too dark to be that. The poster wants to give it for free for furniture but ended up doing this... Honestly it doesn't quite look like black locust maybe honey locust?? Really red rich color. Not my pictures. What do you guys think? Indeed it is pretty as he says but its off limits as firewood or else he'd be selling it. But honestly if that has use for furniture, why in tarnation would you cut it into rounds??
By the way its cut it really its not worth much more than firewood. Tell him you want it for furniture then burn it up.
Actually I should think about that. Maybe tell him Im making table tops for kids. Like tea party tables. Tell him i Cut a bunch of cookies.
Maybe even a way to get bowls. Actually I will back up and say "woodworking" as the ad claimed but thats so general of a topic that anything might be considered at this point. Heck If I tried, would be nice to see if I can make a chair for my daughter for the campfire as a "log stool" Eric VW, feel free to get the kinks out on that one...
Yeah black locust doesn't have a really great smell its not pleasing so im going to guess this one is fragrant. Honey locust What does it smell like to you?
Bear in mind I see more black locust growing where i am but never come upon honey. If this is some, its likely rare in these parts. Black locust is really being sought out for the firewood but folks need to figure out how to wait it out. Let it season! Having cut some 3 months ago barely its heavy as it comes!
I bought ~shame~ a few cords of wood last year... there was a fair amount of BL. Appears to have been standing/laying dead wood, as the bark is all gone. Darn does that stuff smell bad, when burning. But, good heat, for sure.
I have pulled downed Black locust out of wet areas after the bark has started to rot....holy cow! Words to describe it are too offensive for posting.
I hear that RCBS the locust pic I posted was from a tree struck by lightning. The center was rotting out and my Jeep smelled like A$$ driving home.
Y'all are phunny...... It don't smell bad, it smells like awesome BTU's I really have never detected any muy mala odiferosity from it.
In all seriousness FatBoy85, I could see some bowls being turned from some of those rounds, some stock maybe resawn from the lengthier rounds- But mostly I see flammable furniture.
