Log Catcher

Any one tried these? I think it might be good for the old lady's feet if nothing else.

Good idea...will save some bending !! I use an old band saw stand with a board on top...not quite as handy as the real thing though !!

 

I made one out of plywood, but haven't used it for years.

Having it on the side away from you is handy, if on the side by where you stand, it's in the way IMO

Split wood the way is is supposed to be split, vertical,
then it's not needed & no lifting the round or them falling off on to your toes .

Put one on about two months ago. Works good and keeps gas tank from getting all beat up. Smaller one on control side would be handy but beam is only drilled and tapped for one side so would take a little more work to add another. May try the milk crate method to save the back. Just need to get the wife to roll rounds to me and carry splits away from splitter and all would be well.

 

My heart goes out to you folks who have to use a horizontal/vertical splitter. My back hurts in sympathy!

It's hard to beat a dedicated horizontal splitter with out feed tables & a log lift.

But, it IS easier on the back than swinging a maul through a cord of wood.

I was converted this winter, splitting vertical is for the birds and bad backs. The only thing I split vertical so far was the huge rounds, which I split to manageable horizontal size.

Get the tray/cradle, it's a work saver when working while standing. I have two on mine and a work table to my left to store a half round while work on the other half.

I split vertical, but I did get one from the guy in Montana on ebay that's very well built.

Far easier to noodle and wedge then to roll monsters over to the vertical splitter.

 

I got this one too. Easy to install. Easy to remove for towing or vertical splitting. Larger than Speeco brand. 200# wt limit.

 

I built one on my splitter. I'd load pics but this site doesn't allow pics from an iPhone.

No idea on weight rating, but I've flipped the whole splitter over while putting a log on it.

 

How big are your monsters ? Pictures ?

My splitter is on wheels.
Big 19" birch, big for me.

 

I've had some I had to put my big bar on the saw, 18" wasn't enough... somewhere around 3ft. Two guys to put on the splitter.

19" is about the biggest i can run through my processor, anything over I use the "little" splitter to break up.

 

I thinks it's just the size that the site doesn't like. I use an app called batch encoder to bring the files down to a reasonable size before posting from my iphone.

I use the shelf on mine when off loading from the P/U.
Pretty easy to work off the tail gate & split horizontal.
No lifting

I don't have any good pics of some big block and wedgers, but i wont worry about stuff 4' round. Its easy to stand on its side with a cant hook or a peavy and take a saw as small as a ms250 to noodle a cut in just deep enough to start the wedge. Couple a whacks with the sledge and progressively larger wedges if needed and is gets quartered up right quick. I dont know how you guys roll the monsters up that little foot then grab a handle and wait while the wedge tries to push the other end up or forward...
