Anyone into fly fishing or tying? I enjoy chasing all species on the fly, from pond bluegill to tarpon. I also enjoy tying flies. On my homewaters, smallmouth are the target. When I get the chance, I go west to MT for trout, or down south to The Keys hunting tarpon. I get to MI a few times per year to chase trout, smallmouth, pike, and anything else that may fall for a poorly-presented fly. This is a copy from an old post: I have been known to tie a few. I learned early in my teenage years from my uncle in New Jersey. He was quite an accomplished outdoorsman. I tie small trout nymph and mosquito larvae patterns all the way up to striped bass flies. I have a good supply and have not tied in a few years though. I fish local waters for bass, trout and sunfish. I'll fish the local river and salt marshes for striped bass and shad when the run up river. Some of the most enjoyable times are fishing in the summer when bass are breaking top water for dragonflies. A well placed bass bug provides good action. I catch and release everything.
Love fly fishing. We have trophy river and stream fishing for wild Rocky Mountain cut throat and bull trout here, an all wild non stocked fishery. Also we have bass lakes at lower elevations and many great alpine lakes full of rainbows and brookies. I practice catch and release and fish single barbless hook on all rivers and streams but also enjoy taking the odd trout out of stocked lakes for smoking. Also we enjoy kokanee salmon fishing here which are great in the smoker but I dont fly fish for them... Im jealous of your tarpon fishing. I hear its lots of fun. Nice looking flies pjcalla I never got into fly tying but always thought it would be very rewarding catching a fish on a pattern that you've created.

I seriously took up fly 2 years ago and love it. I spent 3 weeks in Alaska in Aug. Caught, caught and caught. Kind of spoiled me. I will be going to Canada with my son this summer. I have been to the place before. I will be using some of my large streamers for the Pike, but the place is polluted with Perch. Anyone have any suggestions on what flies to tie up for perch? Most of the fishing will be spin casting. pjcalla: What part of Indiana? I have a daughter in Ft Wayne.
Never caught perch on the fly. What size fly rod u gonna use on the pike? 7 weight? I have a 6 and a 7 weight and when Im launching the big stuff out there to the bass or bull trout that reach up to 15 lbs I use a 7 weight. Were still ice fishing out here but that will change soon!
I will be using my 7wt on the pike and 4wt Bamboo on the perch. I will also bring along my 5wt graphite in case someone else in our party would like to try fly fishing. My son has fly fished years ago, he might pick the fly rod up if I am out fishing him.
I'm just north of Indy. Well, I got skunked yesterday, but my buddy caught a nice smallie right off the bat. The weather wasn't the greatest (rising river, raining, wind, etc.). It was still nice to get out and enjoy some time on the river. I lost a bunch of flies on snags, but "you're not fishing unless you're losing flies." I'll be twisting up more bugs this week, and hopefully get out again next weekend.
That is a striped bass/blue fish fly. We have some pike in some larger lakes, but I haven't hooked into one of them yet. I tie shad flies also. They are probably running now.
