I actually have a recipe for homemade oreo cookies, but I have never tried to make them. I don't trust myself. Ingredients: For the chocolate wafers: 1 1/4 c all purpose flour 1/2 c unsweetened dutch process cocoa (Hershey's has a Special Dark type) 1tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1 - 1 1/2 c sugar 1 1/4 sticks room temperature butter 1 large egg Filling: 1/4 c (half a stick) room temperature butter 1/4 c vegatable shortening 2 c sifted powdered sugar 2 tsp vanilla (if you have the clear that works well for color) Preheat the oven to 375. in a food processor of mixer, mix the flour, cocoa, baking soda and powder, salt and sugar. Once they are mixed well, on low speed, add the butter and then the egg. Continue pulsing or mixing until it comes together in a mass. Take rounded teaspons of batter nad place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet about two inches apart. Slightly flatten the dough with dampened hands. Bake 9 minutes, rotating once. Set baking sheets on a rack to cool. Filling: put butter and shortening in a mixing bowl and at low speed gradually beat in the sugar and vanilla. Turn the mixer on high and beat for 2-3 minutes until filling is light and fluffy. To assemble, use a pastry bag or a plastic bag with the corner cut out, and pipe teaspoon-sized blobs onto the center of one cookie and then press the other gently onto it. Get a large glass of cold milk and start dunking.
I have been buying off brand OREO's lately from the local grocery store. The package is in espaniol, but they taste just like the real thing. Tuesday, when I go shopping, I'm gonna look and see if they are made in the same place. Best part is, they are only 99 cents. The package looks exactly the same.
Lots of good cookies available from US and made with US labor. I won't buy imported food that is also available from US sources. I can understand food like bananas or coffee, but really, cookies.... That is just too much. Need to keep our brothers and sisters working where we can.
The high fructose corn syrup ( andwho knows what else ) is derived from GMO/GE corn as are the beetsugars /soy lecethins emulsifiers. GMO crops are engineered to work in conjunction with glyphophate/Roundup. ROundup has been (possibly/probably) linked to cancer and other health concerns. ANy and all foods that are made with GE/GMO industrial farmed crops should be labellled as such so that those who wish to avoid them can. Those that want to believe Monsanto has no bias to their science that supports no health concerns for humans can munch away. Like politics, Monsanto and GMO/GE foods is probably a debate/conversation left for other forums.
Hydrox used to be the bomb, I ate 'em when I was a kid. Now they suck. I have a package of 'em on top of my fridge, kids won't even eat them. I'm pretty much restricted to girl Scout cookies anyway. Wife is a Girl Scout leader, both daughters are GS. My house is a major shipping and receiving hub for the damm things.
