This winter has helped me decide about building a wood shed. "note" in the past, 30+ years, Iv'e never needed one "that I thought" but I hated brushing off snowy wood to bring in, maybe I'm getting old. Now, for the record, where I live, the township will "TAX" you for any structure on your property if it is considered an improvement. So I called a few political people here in town and explained what I wanted to do. Long story short, I can build a wood shed without being taxed "as long as I don't use it for recreation or to live in" Oh my God….. It has to be inspected…. and I need a permit$%^*#$%@$%. I'll play the game, but I will have a new wood shed by the end of May, pic's to come
Well, just build it so that nobody will consider it an improvement. I decided to build one, thought about the 100 sq. ft. limit before I'd get taxed, then built what I wanted anyway. I have no idea if I'm being taxed on it or not. If I am, I doubt it's more than buck or 2/year. Didn't even ask about a permit. I've said this before.....aside from getting on the 3 year plan (soon to be the 1,000 year plan), this is the smartest thing I've done in recent memory.
Early May Dave, If weather permits… usually real wet late April into early May. Yea, I'm going 16' long, 7ft high, and 6ft wide. This will give me some good air movement if I leave a ft at the top. I figure, 4.5 cord. What I slate for the winter now
They used to have an exemption for ag use over here on permits. If so over there, just tell them you are raising woodchucks! Gary
Wow, that blows. Put it on pier blocks, now it's temporary. We're good as long at there is no slab of concrete, then it's permanent, and therefore the man wants more.
Over this way it would be taxable if it has 4 outside walls , permanent or not. Building permit and inspections included. The only way out of being taxable is if the shed were and open faced lean-to style structure, 3 sides to the weather.
Friend of mine once had a tax/building inspector problem with his shed. (Tool shed). He pointed to his neighbors yard and asked if his ice fishing shanty was taxable. The inspector said no, it is a portable structure. He proceeded to chain the shed to his truck and drag it across the driveway. The inspector had no case and left.
I am gonna buy a small "port" it's basically a Car Port. You select the size For a 12' x 21 it's about $700 It's a little pricey, but that's installed. You don't do a thing but prep the ground for how you want it (level, concrete, gravel).
Nice heavy roof material . IMO thats a good price for dry storage. Warranty ? Level gravel pad with pallet on top ? Good drainage. Saw some snow pictures, 12' wide would be less snow load x 36 long if you have the room, dry storage is premium space. Never hear anyone say "I built my shed to big" Silicone spray in the fall so (if you get any snow in your area ) it slides off well. Can picture 4' wood siding screwed to the sides , up 6" off the ground. Great idea & price !
That's a great Idea! Only I'm limited for space, it has to go down the side of my property that's why I'm only going 6' wide and 16' long.
