Ott Accu-Stick I've had my eye on one of these for awhile now and finally decided to take the plunge. At 30 bucks it is a little more expensive than making one myself, but I felt the adjustable length and aluminum construction was worth it The anodized aluminum will make it easier to spot if dropped in the woods. It has a high-vis reflective end Ott recommended placing the accu-stick in the valley of the felling spikes like this: But after using it awhile tonight I found I liked it closer to the tip of the bar. Having it placed out there I could quickly mark the entire tree, and then put the accu-stick in my pocket and buck the tree up. What I like so far: Light weight but sturdy Super strong rare earth magnet Easily adjustable length from 14"-26" Made in the USA So far I haven't found anything I dislike about it, and will likely recommend it to friends and family.
I like that one. Best one out of all the commercial ones I have seen I like the fact that it's aluminum and very light and magnet mount I like the magnet mount on the one I made because I can put it on either side or anywhere on the bar I like, mine is adjustable about 4 inches in length but I have to have the small allen wrench to do it. Most of the time that's what I do is, Mark the log take it off then cut it up,, it works ok to leave it on also
I really liked that I could put it on either side of the bar too. Yeah I started out using it with it on there but I was cutting small stuff so it seemed to work better with it at the tip just marking then taking it off. I can see it working good on bigger stuff just leaving it on there.
I haven't seen any commercial ones that I would really buy, too heavy, too flimsy, wrong type of mounting, but I would spend 30 bucks on this one. What's the diameter of that magnet?
Now there's a line ya don't here many guys use in a days time! I tried to make one of these markers using a magnetic trailer hitch alignment device (for backing up to the trailer by yourself) it worked OK, but the magnet was not strong enough to hold it in place once you started cutting...'course maybe my PP5020AV was just too beastly for it
I was going to make my own out of a strong magnet and an old arrow shaft cut down to length. The only problem with that rout is I do cutting for other people at different widths. Guys I did forget to mention in the original post that I'm not affiliated with Ott and this is all just my unsolicited opinion. I had seen cheeper versions for 10 bucks but they weren't adjustable. After handling and using this one 30 bucks is a fair price.
If you go to the link in OP it starts out showing the stick but ends with him showing off his wood stacks :stacke:
I used my mag mount on my PP5020AV cuttin up Backwoods Savage log pile last year . TurboDiesel liked the measuring rod
