Spent over six hours on the road yesterday driving from one end of the state to the other, and back again. The entire trip I was looking at trees on the side of the road, thinking about how they would be good firewood or sawlogs. Then tried to figure out how to convince the State transportation folks to let me harvest the medians in the interstates. I can no longer appreciate the scenery; I spend all my time looking at the tree trunks and the potential uses. I need mental help.
Take a FHC fermented sawdust bath, this helps. This is not approved by the EPA but Scotty Overkill said it cured him of the same sickness.
Last Saturday I took a shopping trip with my sister and as we drove through the countryside I kept noticing all the downs in the woods thinking what a shame that wood was going to waste instead of being cut up into firewood.
I've seen crews on our interstate cutting back to the line. Lots of 6 to 8 in. stuff piled up. Then they come alone and chip it all up. Makes me sick to see that happen, but maybe they sell it off to the biomass burners. Our VA and a local school recently converted to biomass burning. They went on line, then the price of oil took a plunge. Bet they are having a hard time showing cost savings.
I get the same thing with the downed trees on the median and various parts of the highway. I often think how the DOT Could benefit from having wood clearing. Yet there is insurance clauses that keep this from happening. Your truck and trailer out on the highway shoulder is a big no no but its oh shucks nice tree!
There was a post from one of our members in the U.K. regarding a Wood Fuel Co-op. I wonder if some states and or counties wod be open to that concept. Members could be trained in chainsaw use and felling technique then state and or county parks could get free clean up and members could share the wood.
Back in 1973-74 during the oil embargo the state had crews go out and cut along the highway. It was bucked and left for burners to help themselves. Yup the good old days.
They are widening the highway near Akron...went through there yesterday and saw all the cut trees stacked up along the road for miles...had trouble staying in my lane from all the rubbernecking the (very likely) wasted BTU's! I was driving along thinking about how many FHCers would be in firewood for a lifetime if we did a flashmob scrounge on that honeyhole!
You are normal. Just like the rest of us! If you were ...say...dating or engaged to a tree...that is sick...
Yep, I was recently snowshoeing in the mountains ... looking at the the dead trees, thinking about firewood. Funny thing is, my wife read my mind (33 years married and all), and said yes, she sees a lot of firewood as well!
Same thing here. There's been a number of times while driving that 99 looks over at me and asks "you're looking at all the wood , aren't you?" something like that.
Im not engaged to a tree, but its common when I'm out on a scrounge I have a nice round riding shotgun on the way home.
Jon_E You're not sick, you're twisted...sick makes it sound like there's a cure-this, my friend, is a life-long affliction once acquired and I, for one of many here, am not sorry in the least...
