A guy down the street had a huge old oak mostly taken down back near the beginning of the year. And then it just sat. A few of the smaller diameter sections were cut up and taken, but that was it. After our too weak, two week winter in February, I finally had a chance to stop by and ask the home owner if I could have the wood. I was on my way home from work and he saw me walking around the downed tree and thought I was from the city. I was writing a note and he came charging out looking for a fight, expecting I was writing a warning or fine. After I got him cooled off, he told me he hadn't payed the guys who took the tree down because they never finished the job. He had neighbors complaining to the paper and the city about the dead tree, then about the pile of trunks on his lawn. He just had surgery on his shoulder so he could cut it up, and his useless grown up sons are too lazy to bother. I'm leaving him the small easy to split stuff, and taking the rest. I think I'll have to buy a 24" bar and chain for my cs590.
I got there just in time, the day I started cutting, two different people stopped and asked for the wood, one even offered money. I'm giving him a charitable contribution receipt because I'm the pastor/caretaker for the a church, and we heat the parsonage with wood. It helps to be a neighbor, he really wasn't trusting anyone after the first guy he let cut some wood took all the small stuff and didn't share any wit him
I just wish the westher would make up its mind. I started cutting this in a t shirt in February because it was so warm, continued on into March with nice comfortable weather. Then it all froze up and has been way to cold and windy. Now it's still too cold, and there's a blizzard starting here tonight.
I did take some of this time to finally do a minor muffler mod on my 590, and to remove the restrictor pipe from the exhaust of the 490
Man Rowerwet , that looks an awful lot like Maple. Got any split yet? I'd be curious to the the grain.
Not a bad haul for the price of a new bar and chain. After that first picture I am not seeing that tall stump any more. Has it already been hauled off?
Funny seeing this post Rowerwet. Small world. I am only a few blocks from this location. That tree was a hazard with many large limbs falling for quite a while. I was glad they took the bulk of it down before something happened, and I don't see a problem if it takes a little while to clean it up. I really thought that tree would have a lot more rot. I drove by that tree on the day it was cut. My son grabbed a picture while we were stopped. I drove by you a few times in the afternoons when you were loading. I remember the side load ramp to the trailer. Good on you to take a scrounge that big. I thought it was an old sugar maple. There are a lot of large maple in those neighborhoods.
Story like that makes me wonder if the crew started hitting metal in the wood and gave up. Great score if you get out of there without killing a few chains.
Nothing split yet, I'm still too busy hauling it off. I'm still not an expert on wood, if it's maple I'll still be very happy. The parsonage is a big old drafty house, and the fisher is a hungry beast. Usually takes 6 cords per winter, so this is our heat for two winters from now.
The homeowner didn't think it was metal, more like not enough saw for the job. The cut ends don't show any metal, but they stopped at the second story level. One son was going to take up tree carving, and planned to start by carving the stump into an eagle. His dad says he doesn't even run the saw, so that's a pipe dream.
Nope it's still standing, I'm going to try taking it down after I get the trunk cut and noodled. I might have to break out the axe and cut my notch like the old timers
Wow, small world! You're right it's maple now that I take a good look at it. I love the snow, so I hope to get back into the woods at wini kini a few more times. At least I don't have to worry about somebody stealing it, I find most scroungers around here have smaller saws
Not sure if you saw the decent downed limb just up the side street you were parked on. It is just up on the right. The wind took it down a few weeks ago. Your right about not much of a winter. We usually get out on the ice to fish. Second winter in a row with barely safe ice.
