Braved the wind today and finished up the red maple score from grandpa's back yard. None too soon, I might add. He had already gotten all the noodles raked up, scraped down the area where the stumps were ground, and cleaned up all the twigs and chipper leavings. I had planned to take care of all this for him, but he's always loved to work outdoors and there's not a lot left he can do at 90.. Though that is mostly due to family telling him to take it easy - it was only about seven years ago that he finally gave up the chainsaw after helping me take down a three stem butternut at my old house. At the sprightly age of 70 he and my uncle clear cut an acre plus for his then new home site, and hand split the good wood to sell.

I can only hope to age half as well as he has. I'd still pick the man in a fight over just about everybody... They don't make too many of em like that anymore!

-edit- oops, forgot the pics. Truck pic is for scale.

-edit 2- man, the truck almost looks clean and straight in the picture...

I can agree with wanting to age as well as my elders. My dad is doing great at 94 and today my doc told me that I looked to be about 10 years younger than I really am. I will soon be starting a new thread to talk about me personally taking down a large dbh wild black cherry in my back yard. Yes, I am one of those old farts that just won't "act my age".

Good on you & Dad, 47. I hope you have some young ones about to make an impression on.. He had sure made one on me!

The older I get, the more stories he shares, particularly about his time in the service. One of my favorites was how he was missing from the rolls upon being released from ship after Korea, and wound up accidentally in custody of MPs, while still in uniform! Turns out the family name had been butchered when he came to this country from Canada as an infant (mom only spoke French, the man taking her information did not) and he was subsequently recorded incorrectly. He enlisted too young, and whatever handshake and nudge wink agreement that was made to get him on deck apparently failed to clear up the small matter of his not technically existing here... It's great to hear him tell it.
