This is so, so true. Everything I have is "bought and paid for". I owe nothing; except the privilege of living in Lake County Illinois via property tax rape. I've simple tastes, simple lifestyle, work hard when I work now, grow a lot of my food, supply a lot of my protein myself etc..............................it's all about choices we make in life. The folks that poopoo you or bad mouth you or poke fun at you for liking to CSS; IMHO, are jealous of you. Jealous because they don't have the gumption or the work ethic. And too short sighted to see the reward down the line.
Heck ....... I'm remodeling as funds permit as opposed to a home loan because being paid off and ugly when self employed is safer. Hmmm wunder iffun the wife will have a kitchen ceiling for my funeral luncheon........
I will come to the defense of Mellinials although I'm a Broomer. I admit a good many of them have more muscles in their thumbs than I have in my arms. I believe that it depends on how and where they were raised. I live in a very rural county. If they aren't farm kids they have family that has farms and have been exposed to work. My 21 year old grandson just spent 5 hours Sunday cutting and splitting wood along with one of his friends. They both worked their arses off and came back Mon. to finish stacking. My 27 year old grandson has also done a lot of work in the woodlot while I've been under restrictions. Of course both of them have been around the farm when growing up. Some of them do know how to work. Others?
I also will come to the defense of millenials, as I raised some... from my nephews late 90s to some older I have homed and fed... it's easy to judge these kids.. but if you want to .. go have a drink by a bonfire and talk to them... they are scared.. what to do with their life! Farming is not an option, why buy a 500k farm to give milk and corn away... limited blue collar jobs left without school.. yes they are out there but internships to learn... most of their parents chased the house dream.. many saw that go up in a puff of smoke... the stock market.. they believe is corrupt in their life times it's gone up crashed more than twice.. many are drowning in college loans.. and you think they are going to listen to boomers... those advisors told them to go to college in first place... Who is OK they relate too.. Kardashians.. what do they do? reality TV show stars.. real life of something.. they are wealthy and famous for being on their phones and partying not working... most I have talked too think the world we handed to them is a mess.. not sure they are totally wrong... the one that ask me what do I do.. I advise military or trades... especially electricians or plumber's find one of them for less than 60 an hour!
I love that quote!!! I'm gonna have to steal that in the future when needed.............if'n you don't mind!!!!
There is hope, my 16 yr old brother and I C/S/S a few Sundays ago, both millenials , both raised right and knowing that an honest days work earns and honest days pay
Yes, there's that, and you are not a typical millennial. I have never owned a new car at nearly 42, I own my house, but have a mortgage, do all my own work on my vehicles, house etc as much as possible, yes, plus a boat but it was sweat and blood that made it worth twice what I paid for it. My home, in an awesome community, has been my best investment I've made. So I've go no qualms about where I've put my money into. Because boomers just worked, and let companies take care of them, raises have not happened in 20 some years for the middle class, in relation to cost of living increases and other economic reasons. Millenials are OK with moving from company to company, to get raises. This method is the only way that you can really advance your career. Stepping stones as they say. Boomers typically stay put, regardless of pay, gen x ers are in between the job stepping stone scale of moving from company to company. It's an interesting dynamic, that's for sure. The one constant is that the parents are the ones that shape their kids work ethics.
I'm sure glad he didn't take me up on my per piece split rate. I'm in the background running the saw trying to keep him fed with rounds
I appealed, and got my assessment significantly lowered from where they started. But, agreed, it is a messed up affair.
I played the game with the assessors every so often as well some ya win other times well not so good. I think the statement of boomers not hopping around job wise is much over simplified- there are a host of other considerations to consider when changing employment not always about money. although that is a biggie of course. So that said I would be considered of the boomer generation but do not fit the typical description as many here likely do not either. Not only did I move around some but completely changed the venue more than once and finally just chucked the whole mess and became self employed. In addition even when swapping time for dollars I had my own side occupations as well. generally not in the same field so as not to have a conflict of interest.
Pretty much true! It's interesting you see people job hopping, I was raised with the notion of only a few real career jobs, but it's not reality anymore for most. The whole business world has and is changing just like it always has. Businesses aren't loyal anymore and neither are the employee. In my short time I've noticed a huge drop in actual customer service and know how. Nobody knows what is going on or how to do their job! On the other hand most professionals are more highly trained than ever. Worker productivity is higher than the generation before yet the reward is not. It comes down to stagnation, so overall I can't blame the workers or businesses. If you ever look at REAL inflation and cost of living info you can see how broke most people are today. I look at things such at car home and education vs minimum wage and average income.(things like food are heavily subsidised so it's makes things trickery) When people say they worked their way through college, that minimum wage job sweeping floors actually paid for it!
My last employer, who I left 22 years ago to be self employed and is still a customer of mine just told a 30 year employee to either accept a cut in pay equalling about 50% or thanks for your years of service. They set a date for a company meeting. When everyone was all situated somebody read a list of names. "if your name was not read you may leave and go back to what you were doing" then some were taken to their workstation handed a empty box told to gather your thing's and escorted out. Other's told what there new rate of pay would be or a free box. Then the "lucky ones" later found out they would absorb the workload of the departed. Cold, just plain cold.
If you mean the tax number on the 1040-SE, no way. It is likely to go up so Social Security and Medicare don't go broke. It is the total of what I paid as an employee and what the folks I worked for paid without me even seeing it. Darned sneaky way to tax my income by having my employer pay something in taxes that they could have otherwise paid to me but not showing it on my pay stub. I like it better when they disclose the actual amount being withheld from my pay, but that doesn't mean I like paying it.
