How do you know when they have them for sale? Do they come up somewhere in their website?
I have a couple HD stores about 1/2 or so drive away, but I seldom travel in that direction(s) so just stumbling across one sitting on the shelf is almost an impossibility.
    Ok, thanks.
FYI, apparently this guys "saw expert" has said that it is OK for him to let me do a compression test and pull the muffler so I plan to go look at it tonight or tomorrow evening. Just another thought, I almost forgot about the new bore scope that I got for Christmas...I could get a look at things with that if he is too uncomfortable with me "taking it apart"...still can't see the piston skirt and ring(s) that way though, so I'd still prefer to do both if possible.

The only 6401 that I ever owned came from Craigslist, so I'm not personally familiar with HD's practices. How they handle it might be at the discretion of individual store managers. I've read that some rental departments keep an unadvertised list of people who've expressed interest.

    You can check here-
    The Home Depot
Type in your zip code and search all stores nearby.Sometimes they are not correct. The best way to do it is to call them and ask.
The word is getting out they are not lasting as long around here at least.

So I went to see this 272XP tonight...still lookin.
The compression was 120...took a look around inside with my bore scope, she had a little scoring on the exhaust side, no transfer that I could see, but definitely scored up. This piston skirt had some scuffing too, but it almost looked salvageable to me. I forgot the SD card for my scope :headbang:or I'd have a pic or two for y'all.
The air filter was not new, but clean. There was a bunch of Soybean pods stuffed in behind the muffler...apparently mice like Huskys!
It fired right up (after the stop switch was turned to the correct "on") it idled good and ran well. I was able to try it out in a EAB Ash log that they had there...the chain was good and sharp and it cut well, but it would bog a little once you dug the spikes in and pushed it much at all. I figure that was the lower compression showing up as much as anything.
I made an offer that was not accepted yet, but it sounded like if it was still around after their vacation was over here in a couple weeks, I may get a call.
So who would be the preferred parts vendor for top end parts? just so I can price things out, if I end up gettin into it...

OEM Husky stuff has been downright reasonable as of late. Try a local dealer for pricing and compare to what you can get online.

So I see with the aftermarket parts there are Nikasil cylinders and some that I assume are not. I know in bike motors the plated cylinders last a little longer but if you have a seizure, generally it was a lot more costly to repair...so not always a clear cut choice there. Are plated cylinders really that big of a deal with saws?
Also, Meteor seems to be quality aftermarket stuff, are there any other aftermarket brands that are not "total crap"?

Plated is the only way I would go. It's very rare for someone to re-bore/finish a saw cylinder.

I've had better luck with aftermarket cylinders and pistons than any other part. Price OEM parts before you buy "quality" aftermarket too. You might be surprised at how little the difference is in some cases.

I don't really get the thinking that a good running 272xp is only worth $250-300? This is an equivalent saw to an 044, and they go for $400-500 all day long... Sometimes more.

2-series Huskies are simple to work on and reliable, with good power. I'd take a 288xp over an 064, and a 262xp over an 036, any day. If I didn't have a sweet ported 2171, I would be happy to run a 272xp.

What something is worth is how much someone else is willing to pay. right?
I said I would pay up to $250.
If he had a pic of an 044 in the same condition with the same bars and chains my answer would remain the same.
    How much would you pay?

Just from the pics, that saw looks to be in pretty damm nice shape. You would be hard pressed to find an 044 in that shape for less than $400 PHO (more with a bar and chain), and a 272xp is definitely in the same class as an 044...

Now that we know the saw is a bit low on compression, and probably needs a new piston, I would say to me, it's about a $200 saw.

Then again, out here on the west coast, saws tend to have a little higher value than they do in some other areas.

Looking at eBay transactions there's no question that 044's have higher resale value. Just a few days ago someone snagged a nice 272 for $250 shipped, including b&c, but the median is around $350. Only one has sold for over $400 in the last few months, and it was super-clean and had just been thoroughly gone over. The median for 044's is around $500. eBay & PayPal scoop off about 13%, so those prices are higher than what I'd expect to see in a local sale. I'm not saying it makes sense in terms of functionality, but that's where the market is.

With the scoring and compression issue, $200 is a little more than I'd pay for the one brenndatomu is (was?) looking at, but it's within reason. A Meteor piston will cost close to $40, and along the way it might need a base gasket, fuel line and a few other little things, not to mention the time spent messing with it.

Honestly I'm not hung up on brand and that is one of the reasons I started looking at Husky...seems to me like a lot more bang-for-the-buck. Don't get me wrong, I'd buy a Stihl in a heartbeat, but I'm not gonna pay fanboy prices for one, especially since this is not a saw that will get used regularly.
Once I started looking at them, I really like the design of the 272...simple and easy to work one...reminds me a lot of an old 2 stroke bike motor.

FWIW, I've had very little luck talking sense into a seller who has overpriced a saw and already started spending that imaginary money. It seems much easier to snag the ones that are advertised at a good price to begin with, but only if you use a smartphone app to alert you when one comes up for sale. Desirable machines priced below market (which is what you seem to be looking for) get snapped up very quickly.

Not nextdoor, but not terribly far. About 45 minutes away.

Hmm, too bad...I'd be somewhat interested, but not enough to put anybody to any trouble for it.

I guess I should update this thread. I made the owner of the topic 272XP an offer, he said he was going on vacation and would think about it and let me know when he got back if he was interested in my offer...never heard anything. In the meantime, I got to reading up on those chi-kneez MS660 kits, and after literally days of reading (in my free time) I decided to go for it. So supposedly I have a kit coming mid May. (group order) As a former bike mechanic, it wouldn't be the first time I built a runner from a box-o-parts! Actually sounds like fun to me!

Interesting. I'm courios to find out how that works out for you. I occasionally see them for sale for what seems like a pretty good price, but am pretty hesitant to purchase one.

Let us know how it runs and cuts when you get it going! :saw::saw:

6421's just off rental duty are 300. You won't get them for less. Trust me, been there done that. I missed out on a used, ex rental 6401 for 175, but that was nowhere near as nice as the just off rental 6421 I got. That 6401 had a lot of use though.

That said if you can find one, go for it. The 84cc big bore is $100.
