Been looking for a bigger saw, found this one for sale. Assuming everything checks out on it, what is a fair price on it? Comes with a 20" bar, a 25" bar, and a couple extra loops... upload_2017-3-4_17-56-0.png

The most I would pay is $250. Maybe check with jd87 ?

Yeah, I was thinking $300 at the most assuming there are no issues and it isn't as worn as it looks.
The guys says it is 13 YO, had fresh top end 6 years ago, still runs strong and really doesn't have that many hours on it...looks rode hard and put away wet to me if it really is "low hour". I'll know more after seeing it in person...gonna do a compression check and pull the muffler and air cleaner.
Anything specific to look for on this particular model?
I thought about PMing jd87 if he doesn't check in here.

Well it can't be 13 yo. They were discontinued 20 years ago and replaced with the 372. Unless he got it from another country. Maybe he bought from someone in 2004.

So I ask him if it would be OK to do a compression check and pull the muffler to check the cylinder and piston/ring(s)...he says "ain't nobdy tearing muh saw apart". I says "it is just the spark plug and two bolts to pop the muffler off"...he says "well, let me check with my Stihl guy" Say what?!
Oh, and by the way "his Stihl guy" told him his 272XP is a commercial saw and is worth at least $400 all day long...hmmm, me thinketh I wasteth my time here...

That one looks cleaner than the 372xp I was looking at. Still, if he thinks it's worth 100 more than your willing to pay at the top of your range, then it may be impossible to reach a deal. Who knows though.

Was this saw bought at Lenox Equipment? If so, I might know the guy who has worked on it.

I don't know where he took it...Lenox Equipment doesn't sound like anybody nearby that I've heard of.

272XP is a classic Husky, some like them better than the 372. But.....

Everything is "low hour" as long as it runs and doesn't have a meter.

Telling someone something is "commercial" or "pro" grade automatically makes it worth 2x what you are willing to pay.....

If you don't know enough about a saw to understand why someone would want to do a compression check and pull the muffler.....

However, to be fair, I understand the reluctance. And I seldom do these things on a spontaneous purchase. If it starts easy and runs/tunes properly, there is rarely anything major to worry about. Now if you're buying something a little more valuable, like a rare vintage saw or spending a few bucks on a clean non-runner that "only needs a carb kit", then by all means do a couple checks.

The 28" bar and chain is probably worth 50-60 $ used.

Appreciate the offer Eric, but I'm sure we would be talking way more $$ than I'm willing to put into a saw that I'd really only use a few times per year...20" saw has been my "big dog" so far, if I have needed anything bigger I borrow something from my brother...but I don't like to borrow equipment too often, even if it is available "any time I want it".
I started out looking for a $150-200 saw that would pull a 24-25" bar...been looking for over a year now, just very difficult to find a decent deal on a low $ big bore saw around here...and I would even be willing to look at non runners! Too many people around here scarf that stuff up the instant it comes up...lots of "chainsaw mechanics" in these parts I guess.
Missed a $75 Stihl 041 by a couple hours a few weeks ago...it popped up again 2 days later "with a fresh tune-up" for $200...was gonna go look at a 65cc Partner saw for $150, but the guy said he lent it out and would call me back when it came back. Never heard from him but the ad was renewed and the price went up...I just said screw it, never went to see it...the ad finally came down after about a year.
Anyways, we'll see what this doods "Stihl guy" has to say about me "tearing this thing apart" to check it out.
25", but this would be on top of the $250-300 you mentioned above?

No I think 250-300 for everything in the picture. I gave 300 for my 372.
Love the 2 series saws , very easy to work on.

No problem. Just throwing it out there, bud:thumbs:
I'll tell ya who has a sweet 2 series saw that I bought and sold back to the original owner..... HoneyFuzz.
266se with the metal brake, that saw loved the 24" Forester I put on it, and it occasionally wore the 28" Forester I got for the 576xp....
He pulled it off the FHC classifieds but might be tempted to talk w/ ya... he's in Ohio too.
That saw was pullin 180 psi when I got it, ran like a r@ped ape, never gave up. A real winner. He didn't use it much IIRC til he offered it back up for sale. If I had the clams at the time, I'd have gladly got it back. And Fuzz is a super great guy to deal with:yes:
Speaking of which, haven't heard from that cat in a while....

Any good running clean all OEM 272's seem to go for around $300-$350 condition depending.I'd say somone asking $400 plus for a 272xp it better be very low use and super clean.Biggest thing to look for on them is aftermarket parts.there a dime a dozen on eBay and dirt cheap.if you see one that's very very clean confirm it's all OEM before you shell out any big bucks

All OEM parts will have an EM original stamp on them and in most cases if your buying a saw people should be up front with you as far as rebuilds. If I can't get OEM parts I use meteor cylinders and pistons I've found there the best product after OEM.

I think you need a Home Depot Makita 6401.
