Ashwatcher So requested pic of dogs. I've posted some before in the pets thread but here they are in front of the stove. That's their second favorite place when not out running the woods with me.
Left work early because well I was excited and it's Friday so why the hell not. No wood delivery. Drove by and the tree is still standing but the huge branch was all cleaned up. Oh well. I am 3/3 with this technique but ya gotta lose sometime. Most of the tree guys are happy to get rid of it, maybe this guy keeps the wood or maybe he was insulted at my bribe. Either way, it's the weekend and now I have no wood to work and even worse no beer to drink!!! Guess I'll accept defeat and head up to the store for my weekend rations. Gave it the old college try. Was looking forward to doing some cutting but there's plenty around the house to keep me busy. I can work on the small pile I did manage to grab if I really need a fix.
Was this on the main drag? I thought you were kidding about the beer....that's like leaving my cat's food out to attract coons and possoms...soon hobos and bums will be lurking around your neighborhood!
"I swear there was free beer here last week!" I did think about that also. It's in a quiet neighborhood and I put it behind a log and put some branches over it so that's not likely. The homeowner on the other hand, maybe he's kicked back enjoying some pops!
I have never heard of them. A quick search reveals that they are some type of drinking club posing as runners. Close?
Yes...a drinking club with a running problem....they meet at a pub for an hour loosening up....then send out the hare who sets the course and hides beer along the route which can be in several directions to throw the hounds...later reconvening at the pub to drink more beer and laugh it up....special runs are arranged like a red dress run, full moon run, Friday the 13th run etc.....there may be some initiation ritual but no one gets too hurt
For anyone who followed this or cares the mystery has been solved but now we have a new mystery. Homeowner of the tree knocks on my door this morning asking me if I want more wood from the tree, well I really have no room and just turned down some silver but this is sugar maple so I say ok. Then he tells me he just got back from vacation and the tree is limbed and laying all over his lawn but trunk is left and he has no idea who did it. What? How do you not know who cut your tree? Tree service he had originally hired says they were too busy to get to it till spring and they didn't do it. He thinks maybe the power company because there were still huge limbs over the wires and he hasn't had anyone trim it yet. Told him I'd come by tomorrow and grab what I could. As he was leaving he says "so I still got your beer". Told him thanks and to keep it. So mystery of missing beer was solved but now we have no idea who cut the tree, strange. So anyways, now I got some primo wood I have to make some room for even though I turned some down just yesterday. Yep I got the hoarding bug bad! Snap a pic for y'all tomorrow.
I always tell my wife that the wood just doesn't get cut up on its own. In your case, it might have done just that.
Well it did get cut up on its own but in varying lengths, going to have to recut. So I'll still be able to use that excuse!
Went this morning and grabbed a load. Then went back later afternoon when a friend stopped by and grabbed the rest. I got some work ahead of me! Going to have lots of chunks once I get it cut to size. It's hard to complain but I will anyways. I get it that your just cutting this to get it out of the way and do it as fast as possible but really how many more cuts would it have been if you cut to stove size lengths? Oh well, free sugar maple! Who's got ideas on best way to go about working on that pile getting stuff cut down to 16"? I usually just work from the pile but may build a quick sawbuck. The full truckload and my ever growing pile.
There's still about 30' of the tree standing, all branches are gone. I'm half tempted to just see if he'll have a service drop it and I'll clean it all up for him. He's getting rid of it anyways. It's huge though, I'd have to buck and split on site. Probably over a cord of wood in it. Will put me 4+ years ahead but there's the room issue. Didn't talk to him today so the mystery still stands of who actually cut all the limbs off.
Looks like a lot of nice size rounds for the 24" I cut to.. wanna drop it off here? I do hear you. I get a lot of tree service wood, and it makes for some... interesting splitting and stacking for sure. My uglies pile is usually 25 percent of the hoard.
Yeah, I had to deal with recutting from the tree service freebies I got. Yes there's some uglies. I don't think there's an easy way to do it. Uglies burn still, so it's all good.
This is a great thread, it's like one of those murder/mystery whodunits. I loved reading along to this story. Free wood in northern New England is hard to come by, awesome for you. Enjoy your bounty Horkn
After I get an this cut and split, I'll need more to cut, then split. Looks like I'll finally be getting a bigger saw for my birthday this week. I won't ask for as much as I got last time. That was 2 loads. I can also cherry pick and hopefully get more primo BTU stuff, oak, sugar maple, locust, etc. Maybe some smaller rounds?
I will, but I still have to get the woodshed project rolling. Our crazy weather has made this easier on me. I can't make too big of a stack where I'm stacking now, as I have to move it again.
