Youngster, not many people my age remember how to work either and I was born 12 years before you. I was more or less on the leading edge of the boomers but even then most kids were finding ways to avoid any real work. That worked out for me during my earnings years because it meant I was always the one promoted or given the tough but rewarding assignments. If these young people would learn that real work does get rewarded I bet many of them could figure out how to do it. They are greedy and lazy but not stupid. Early on I figured out that working smarter saved me tons of physical effort but made it so that I was doing more than my "fair share" when outsiders looked at me. I was the guy that never broke a sweat but got a lot done because I took the time to figure things out.
Almost any thing in this world can be automated or computerized or out sourced but some things will always have to have a hands on approach by an actual human being. When and if the SHTF it is those of us who have spent our lives groveling in the mud and the blood just to eek out a living who will win what ever race it was we were entered in when we were given our destiny on this journey we call life. I was born bald, toothless and broke and by God, I am going to be pizzed if I dont die the same way!
Small-medium sized trees can be harvested mechanically by feller bunchers, but the big ones & those on rough steep unstable ground still need an individual skilled faller. And whole buildings can be imploded or knocked down by a crane/wrecking ball but it takes an entire team of those skilled in the various building trades to put up a new one or remodel an existing one. I don't thing any robots will/can do that in the far future even.
I've asked some "young'n's" to work for me as an apprentice before. I told them if you give me 3 good, honest years of work as an apprentice.................and show me you want to learn the trade; I can guarantee you a 6 figure income within 3 years of starting your own business. They either work for a few months and quit.................expected, as it's hard work. Or think they know the trade after 6 months and go out on their own; when in reality, they only know enough to be dangerous!!!! Farrier by the way.
Someone has to pick up the slack. People forget where hippies came from and caitlyn Jenner. Boomers also type two words a minute(with their pointer finger) and can't grasp any sort of technology much less change. They forget how much our dollar has devalued, They still seem to think if you work a summer job you can pay for school They fear silly things like ethanol in gas, and generally anything new or unfamiliar. They all ask what shorthand is IMO smh lmao etc instead of googling it..... Physical Work ethic has more to do IMO with demographics and where and how(morals) you grew up with. More city and urban kids. I recently read an article about how deaths in national parks are on the rise, and it's city people doing the dying. They don't understand natural things like heights slippery rocks or wild animals or hot springs/ gysers...!..... Most people haven't seen a cow, and don't know how to "grow things" as in a garden
I hear all that you are saying, I came from a family having just a mom in the 60's and we didn't have much money as a kid so from the time I was 14 I worked any way I could, Landscaping March to November, Haying in the summer for $1.00/hr. and shoveling snow in the winter anywhere and anyhow I could. Not many crumbs fall off of an empty table, so I worked. Thanks for calling me youngster, I don't get that much anymore!
This past fall after spending a day off c/s/s, after school my son and I went to get our haircut with Tammy who been cutting the families hair for 30 years and has seen my stacks and knows what I do. When in comes this lumberjack shirt 28ish guy like we saw above, Not a hair out of place on his head or beard needing to be cut. When Tammy came and told me it was my turn, asking what have you been up to? I just had to mention loud enough to be heard, that I had spent the day c/s/s how ever much wood I had done that day. There was a real lunberjack in the house.
Yep. I heard from a guy who's grandfather was an old time logger that he would take his new Filson Tin Pants and chop them to length with his axe. Most of them had 2 pairs that they rotated. Never washed, and never worn into the bunkhouse. (For obvious reasons) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You are right, most things can be automated. But when they invent a robot that can drive along and stop to pick up power line trimmings, I'm asking for one at Christmas. Then I'll have more time to go.......
I agree. Its not just millennials. A couple of co-workers wanted to go with me and get some wood. So I brought them. All they had to do was carry it about 2o feet to the truck. Both of them broke out singing Ol Man River and then decided to quit about a third of the way into the job. Said they wernt going to EVER do this again. For crying out loud. It was HICKORY and OAK. I would drag it a mile. (exaggerating at tad). Just dont get it. NH mountain man your right. I dont need to go to no sticking gym as long as there is wood to burn.
Guess which of my pups has the millennial attitude? One's tired from playing fetch, the other. Well....
Rock on, man! I work out so I can more efficiently gather wood! I've burned down many high school football players who thought they knew what hard work was. When I was in high school, we put up square bales, and picked melons in the summer... Talk about hard, sweaty work! I don't think most kids will do that work anymore. Moving around weights and jogging in yoga pants (plum hiders) dont match the work out you get with real work. Yep, put up many of those square bales. Now its all round bales because they cant find any body to throw it on the wagon. Worked in chicken houses getting rid of that smelly stuff with a shovel. That was before anyone thought of using a loader to push it around. I got used to that smell except when it started burning my eyes. Cutting fire wood never seemed like work to me. I paid my way through junior college selling it. Couldnt believe people would actually pay for it.
Heck no. They want to let the Mexicans do that menial labor while they collect their 6 digits doing ...well...what ever they do...but they deserve 6 digits doing it. We all have to admit though, we had it better than the generation before us
