Kinda looking for a stove to replace the Englander in my shop... OR find a nice stove for the house and put the St. Croix in the shop. Need a little more HP out there.

My local dealer has a ton of used stoves in stock.... Whitfield Quest $999.00... Another Whitfield for $1099.00. Both have been serviced and I believe they give a one year parts warranty (they did when I bought my St. Croix from them in '06).

Also found an Enviro Mini ('06) for $450.00 on CL ..... that could work for me and the price is right.

    Thoughts?

Are there parts available for the Whits?

Wait, looks like plenty of aftermarket parts.

Howdy Krooser, can only relay my CL experience looking at used stoves during this winter season hasn't been 'great' - lots of seller nonsense, e.g. stove condition much poorer vs. what was posted / stove issues not listed / more than a few wasted trips. It's been a PITA.

Just saying it might be worth an extra few hundred $$$ to buy from a dealer you know & have had good experience w/ in the past, or wait until later in the season when the weather warms up, and the deals are better.

    * I'd keep looking (I still am), but I won't be going out of my way / traveling over an hour to look at a stove, at this point.

and, typically, youll get some kind of warranty from a dealer, but from CL......not likely.

The dealer with the Whitfield's stocks parts as they were also a dealer for many years.

The Enviro is still hooked up and is ten miles from me... would be easy to fire up and test. My only problem right now is cash flow.

Cash flow, what's that? :D :makeitrain"

Dunno what the Enviro Mini's horsepower vs. the Englander is - but 10 miles away would be worth a look here.

It's been one extreme or the other here LW, either complete indifference about selling the stove ("well if you don't buy it, someone else who doesn't have half a clue will come along.."), or ( "bring the full amount in cash, or don't show up.." ) Sure. I always carry large amounts of $$$ to someplace I'm visiting without vetting out first, sight-unseen.

    * I can fully understand why used stove purchasing is not part of your business model, LW. :picard:

I think they are both about 35K or so… my ONLY gripe about the Englander is the fan speed isn't very high. The Enviro would work fine in my house and the St. Croix would replace the Englander in my shop.

I'm assuming my buddy who owns the shop stove will want it back someday...

My St Croix is very quiet now since I installed the new room fan...it will run lots slower now so you can barely hear it run on low speed. Much better.

That is too bad. I looked at two used stoves on CL (the Hastings and the P43) and bought both. Heck, I didn't even look at the P43 before agreeing to buy it (for 1K I couldn't go wrong and haven't put a dime into it except the hopper extension). I guess I got lucky.

Oh wait, I just remembered before buying the Hastings I looked at a St. Croix Greenfield. It was in really good shape (as advertised) and burned well when they started it up for me, but I really wanted auto-start. The next day the Hastings showed up on CL for the same price.

However, you have a great point in using a seller that he has already had good luck with and most likely will give a warranty - that type of experience is priceless.

There may have been a little luck, but you did your homework, found a seller that was motivated to sell (moving), struck up a rapport, and did not deviate on your offer price .. And you did 'kind of' steal that Harman.

None of that kind of luck so far. Yet. Will keep looking, choices should improve at the end of the burn season.

Well yeah, that P43 deal was rather different since I didn't "need" a stove because I had the Hastings, so it was just a wait and see if it panned out.

For what it's worth, I prefer to skip the risks of buying used anything, and buy brand new. Stoves or vehicles, pay a little more, but keep them for 20 years, and you always know exactly what you have.

oh, we do sell a few used units....Harman only. We have to buy them cheap, because we end up going through them, replacing parts which are old, faulty, look like heck, etc. Also end up painting them, and warrantying them for a season. Ends up costing a bit to refurb them, so we have a pretty good handle on what we have into them. We have never dickered on costs though.

Smart business right there-do it right, know your costs and sell at the appropriate price for both you and the buyer
