I dunno about OWB, but for forced air wood furnaces the drop dead date is May 15 2017 IIRC. If you buy one before that date then fine, but if it doesn't meet the new regs you can only use it at your current location for as long as you are there. If you move, you can't take it with you, can't leave it either (it can't change ownership or location) you can't sell it or give it away...it has to be destroyed. (by what their rules say)

I don't think I could ever go back to a traditional wood stove for those 2 reasons alone.

It's about 30 years old and I worry every year that it'll develop a leak, but other that that I love it. I light a fire every evening for a 6 hour burn and that stores enough heat until the next evening; I go through about 3 cords a year. My dad and BIL have similarly sized houses and live within 10 miles of me and they burn similar amounts of wood, the difference is they both have inserts and keep a fire going 24/7.

I have one of these and it works great. As for me,I'm not afraid to pack it to the gills and go to work(or bed). I wouldn't shut the air off completely. The only time I ever had trouble is when I choked the air off and the carbon monoxide detector was singing at 3 am-this was about 4 years ago when we first bought it. Tryed using it like wood stove at my hunting camp. Furnace is a different animal

I'm sure it is nothing to you since you live there but we made our first stop at Mayberry days last year. Second time we have been there but first for Mayberry days.

Yea mine will run you out. I choked it down one night trying to get a longer burn and the draft wasn't enough and any little puff of wind down the chimney would blow smoke out the draft holes. I caught it in time but it could have gotten pretty smoky in here.

You need to swing in around October and check out the autumn leaves festival. It's Mayberry days on steroids.

I'll keep that in mind, we usually vacation in late Sept after the all the youngins are back in school. Not sure so much about this year as the wife just started a new job. If she hangs with it our vacation will be short and close by.

    As I understand it, yes.
Again, as I understand it, no.
I can post a link to the EPA rules on this matter...see if any of you can decipher the legalese any differently than me. The one thing I'm not positive on is if the manufacturers are going to be able to sell off their existing inventory after that date or not...my understanding is not, because I believe they were already given an extra year...I think the original date was May 15 2016, but the wood furnace manufactures raised such a ruckus that they gave 'em an extra year to do RnD. It is much harder to get a big ole furnace to meet the new standards (partially due to the "automation" (thermostat controlled) that most of 'em have) than it is a stove.

I try to make sure my wood stove has been turned down and settled into a steady burn before leaving the house, but I don't worry about it burning the house down. I know it was installed properly with all the proper clearances on the stove and chimney and even if it should go ballistic (it's been tested a few times :emb:) I know it's not going to catch anything on fire.

I can certainly understand being a little nervous with any newly installed wood/pellet stove, electric/gas/oil/propane furnace, etc... but after a few days or weeks with the new appliance I would think one would develop a trust, especially if you knew and could see that it was installed and functioning properly.
But to those that aren't comfortable leaving their wood stoves burning when they go to sleep or leave the house I ask, just exactly what form of home heating device would you be totally comfortable with? and why?
